Check at some of the freight boards. Lots of flatbed freight coming in and out of south east Texas.

Do you know of any boards that show what they pay (if you're not a member)?

Most loadboards do not list the rate. It is up to the broker or shipper to decide whether they want to list the rate in the post. Some loadboards do show average rates for specific freight lanes. I can usually do better on those lanes than is being reported. If you look at the rate for lanes you need to take the published rates with a grain of salt.

one way I use to deal with the wind is for example, if the wind is blowing from back of trailer to front of trailer, I will secure a few bungies to the rear & the direction of the wind will help me pull tarp where it needs to go. the wind can help you too. I saw one guy trying to get his side kit tarp back in place one day & after several attempts, the wind kept blowing it back. he stopped for a min had a thought look on his face & got in his truck & just put truck/trailer in opposite direction & the wind blew his tarp right into place. I looked at that & thought. wow! it did not occur to me to do that, or what he was doing until I saw what happened.

I'd go with an International if you're looking for a cheaper truck to start out with. I'm running a 99 9400i with 920k miles on it and it has less squeaks and rattles than any KW I've driven. Like, three in the entire cab and one is the driver's seat. Still gets over 7mpg with the old N14 Cummins too, though everyplace I park looks like the Exxon Valdez crash landed there.
