How to Haul for a race team?

good luck from what i have heard it is hard to get in with them boyz

 

The best way to anything for a race team is to move the Charlotte NC area and then try to get on with the team doing any thing you can like sweeping floors or what ever it takes. Those guys that drive the rigs are way more than truck drivers most have another job and just drive the rig because they have a CDL. My brother in law works for RCR as an acft mechanic and he has 2 or 3 jobs on the team so they work on allot of the different things he got his start as a contractor filling in every once in a while when they needed him and finally after along time got on full time so its hard to get a job with them to start with so my advise is move to the area and start knocking on doors till one opens. Its like breaking into the music business you have to be persistent and be in the right place at the right time.

 

Yeah there is, around here (metro det area) Roush has been looking for experienced car haulers, mostly to haul test and show cars, but talking to a friend there, he said that it can turn into a race car hauling job, given enough time and proving you can do a good job. And then,of course, relocation will probably be neccesary.

 

You can keep the "glamour' job and leave me to straight trucking. Let's look at some of the bennies of driving for a Nascar team. You have other work to do, and you are going to start by sweeping the floors for minimum wages, if not for free. You are going to work every weekend, have to relocate to their area, and you are always going to have someone else looking for a chance to take your job. You are going to get constantly asked for goodies that don't even belong to you, and your hometime is going to be lousy.

And I am sure that there are even worse parts of it I can't think of. I would much rather drive a regular truck hauling freight and leave the glamour jobs to someone else.

 

Don't forget to mention the off-season what will you do then? Maybe get a local job and hope for a call back?

 

I also forgot to mention that it is a team operation, so you will sleep in a moving truck and not have control of what you are doing.

i would like to add to what Burky stated:

There is a higher probability of being pulled around back at a scale, if for the only reason that the scalehouse personel is so enamoured by your rig--and the fact that it is a big-time race team that they just want to talk to you (and try to get "free" paraphenalia) not to inspect your rig. These are time-killers.


I'm not sure if i can help, because my situation is slightly different:

What one of my goals is, is to drive/crew for a drag team. There are a few schools that train you to work on race crews and being that everyone knows each other, they have "job placement department." Since i have a CDL w/ lots of experience as well as dragging experience, i feel i have a pretty good shot at working as a driver/crewperson for a major league team.

Most drag teams are based in So. Cal and strangely enough Indiannapolis.
