Definitely buy something used that is pre-emissions. Do research on the type of truck you are getting and find out what kind of MPG it should get along with how many miles on it, has it had an inframe, etc. DO NOT work just off of load boards, you will go broke. Use the load boards as a reference point for what some loads are paying out of an area, so you know if you are screwed or not. Another thing to know is what your truck is going to cost you per mile vs what the frieght is paying per mile, Do some research before just blindly taking loads. Some people think that taking 1.75 cpm is a good freight rate, If your getting that and think its good, GOOD LUCK TO YA

Is their anyone that had taken a brokerage class? Did it help in learning the inside straight.

I am thinking now, it might be better to wait and not pull equity and buy a truck.

I havent but its simple to figure out and thats why you NEVER TAKE THE FIRST RATE OFFERED TO YA. Brokers are scum, all of them. They figure out the bottom dollar a guy might haul a load for after they double and triple broker it and they offer you that rate first. What double and triple brokering is lets say im an agent for a company. I have one or two other brokerage companys I run. I then get the load with one company, sell it to the other and the next and finally to the driver. If they are calling you, always say no the first time. Its funny how they will call you back 10 minutes later with a better load. Here is one example of this. I was down in Houston and was first offered a load paying 2.18 a mile at 46000 lbs. I said NO and ten minutes later was offered a 36000 lb, 2 pickup, 2 stop low to the deck load that was 2.85 cpm. So what if you sit for a day or the weekend. I didnt sit at all with that one and look at the difference.

    OK, i get the comparision.
There are alot of comparisions on loads and no 2 are the same except if your dedicated.

LTL is always going to be higher as well as some hazmat, but I understand the first or posted bid is always lower.

I just found out yesterday 2008 trucks will be able to run till 2023 with their smog emmissions and to retrofit a older truck would cost some 20K.

    2008 truck=60k older truck 25K+20k=45k

How is CHrobinson to get loads from, are they better than most?
It states on thier website, "to get in with a local branch office to get the new loads, before they are posted". Is that what you meant by off sale? The loads no one will take because it's just to LOW...:biggrin_25511:

I havent worked for ch robinson directly only through my company so I have no idea on that. Yes you do want to align yourself with a good agent or a couple of good agents as they always keep the good loads off of the boards. CH Robinson is definitely one of the biggest. Are you going under your own authority or someone else's? I work for American Transport (all o/o) and they do all the dirty work of checking and giving credit to brokers and collecting from them. I always get paid quickly after the trip is done and scanned in. They are very strict but they are also endorsed by the OOIDA. If you havent already joined OOIDA, do so. I have been helped several times and my father in law too
