Hi all I have got a 1990 cummins big cam iv it says on the tag it is a fleet 285. 300hp at 1700. I know how to set the valves just a little confused on the injectors it says on the tag that injector setting is t.s. zero lash. Do I set the injectors just tight so the push rods will spin do I set them with the valves. Thanks for your help

You will need to find A,B,& C on your accessory drive pulley. The marks will be near the front cover on the pulley. Also, you will see a arrow like pointer on the cover. That is what you line the marks up with. You then will set the valve lash to .011 on the intake and .023 on the exhaust. The intake valves are the center ones under each valve cover. You will set the lash in this order. You verify where to start by determining which set of valves are closed, meaning which rocker arms are loose. The injectors should be set to 6in.lb. or snug with a screwdriver. Be sure to depress each injector lever slightly as you go through the sequence of adjusting them. This squeezes oil from the injector so that you're making the adjustment against injector return spring pressure and not fluid or hydraulic pressure. You will set one set of valves and one injector at each position in the sequence. It will take two complete revolutions of the accessory drive pulley.
Valve Inj.
A 3 6
B 6 2
C 2 4
A 4 1
B 1 5
C 5 3 -
thanks bender that sound simple enough. how about turning up the fuel a little
-
You could adjust the AFC setting for better throttle response and replace the fuel button in the PT pump for higher fuel pressure to the injectors.
-
thanks bender I tried the settings as you desribed got the valves set but the injectors seemed to tight. When turning the motor it got tight so I backed the injectors back off and the motor turns fine. It might be my torque wrench should these injectors be bottomed out when they are adjusted? I just snug the injector back up till the push rod would not spin.

The injector setting is 6 inch pounds which requires an inch pound torque wrench. Did you use a foot pounds torque wrench? The injector should be at the upper limit of travel when adjusted properly and the push tube will rotate.
-
I was using a inch pound torque wrench. the injector had more travel left after the setting it. but when i turned it over with a wrench it got tight.

You may have started your adjustments on the wrong sequence. When you bring your pulley up to the A mark, either cyl 3 or cyl 4 valves will be closed (loose rockers). If cyl 3 rockers are loose then adjust #6 injector. If cyl 4 rockers are loose then adjust #1 injector, then just follow in order until all adjustments are complete. You have top stop injectors, so adjustments will be made at the top of the injectors travel limit.
-
What does top stop mean in comparison to the pt. Will the injectors be bottomed out when firing with them adjusted properly. It could be my torque wrench also it is very hard to feel at that low of a setting.
-
If you tell me the CPL I will give you the exact torque on the injectors using the base circle method. and the Jake setting.
On a you set #1 or 6, on B you set either 2 or 5, On c you set 3 or 4. The valves are set at .014 for the intake and .027 for the exhaust. You torque down the injector first, then the valves.
I have no Idea where Bender got that information but I have been setting up Cummins since the late 60's and never seen that one.
