They want to make sure you can pay back the $20k "student loan" if you don't make it (contract employment duration) - and they take you to court.

A word of advice, if you want to throw you money away on a lawyer go ahead but he will be the only one to make any money and it will be out of your pocket.
You may think Stevens is crap but I can assure you they have very good lawyers on staff just waiting for you.
Stevens has to account for previous employment in order to qualify for the government grants for training, no secret.
This thread is unbelievable, it's a new low and a big reason truckers deserve the rap we get from joe public. Everyone calm down and take a breath, jeeez anyone over the age of 16 on here? -
Guy leaves the country for 3 years and thinks he will need only a AP to get hired at a OTR trucking outfit?
because a recruiter said so?
Yep, can't put in Mexico city for 3 years in the occupation section to fill the gap.
All needed was a call before the drive to HR, and they would of told him to get a notarized affidavit accounting for the time. Anything over 30 days needs to be accounted for. Been there done that. -
Not true. Stevens is the only company to my knowledge that has a income requirement, and they aren't they only OTR carrier with in-house training.

A few months ago I ran into much the same situation. Fortunately I followed my gut and decided NOT to attend their training.
In essence I made over 10,000 each year but I resented having to provide all the documentation that they wanted (1099's tax statements, etc). And it seemed like I was being told different things. I would provide what they asked for and suddenly it wasn't good enough and I needed to provide something else. Then I would provide what they asked for again and was told that I needed more. In the end I wisely decided it wasn't worth the gamble to make all the life changes necessary to make the 1,000 mile trip on a Grey hound bus. I thank my lucky stars I didn't risk it because I know for one reason or another they probably would have sent me home (Though I have a perfect MVR and criminal record).
I was also asked to have forms faxed directly from the IRS to them. Apparently since I did my own taxes and did it the old fashioned way (handwritten) this wasn't good enough and I needed it to come from them. I think I was basically asked to lie (not sure it's such a big deal but still) to the IRS and tell them their number was my fax number. This also made me pretty uneasy.....
Best of luck. Don't let anyone treat you like the meat they want you to haul!!! -
Any more, Now days, any place you want to go to work for, be it in trucking ,Micky D's Sears' Best buy, etc, once they have your ss# on the application, they WILL and do run credit checks on each new appalicant.
I belong to Life Lock, and hours upon my current employer had ran a credit check on me, Life lock had called me and emailed me, to inform me, that some one had looked into my creditline. -
Credit checks I can see plausable. You're handleing money as a cashier at McDonalds, hauling loads worth millions as a truck driver, etc. If you can't handle your own money wisely, that tells your employer you aren't going to handle their money wisely. That may be a stereotype, but that's how most employers see it. The employers insurance may require a credit check.
SSN's are used for more than credit checks also. SSN's can be used to look up criminal records, address history, MVR's, work history, etc. -
Kinda reminds me of the old saying
"The first thing you have to do in order to get a loan is prove that you dont need it"Hardlyevr Thanks this. -
If I absolutely had to I could live off $10K a year. Id go build a shack in the woods, hunt and fish for food. Grow tomaters and a few other things. No cable, no internet, no big screen TV, no $100 cell phone payment etc...Probably would still have money left over.Injun and Rollover the Original Thank this.
