Eddie_crb1. First of all, I'm a wannabe trucker, thus you will get a better or more knowing response from those that currently drive for a living.

Congrats on obtaining your CDL as you are ahead of most of us newbies. However, because you have a CDL and no driving experience I doubt any company will hire you until you obtain and pass a driving course. There are many training companies that would take you as a student, e.g., Stevens, FFE a.k.a. Frozen Food Express, Prime, CR England, and a few others.

Even an experienced truck drivers holding a current CDL are often required to attend training if they have not driven for a few years. The best advice I can give is to call the recruiters at aforementioned companies and other training companies.

When you do call various recruiters please take what they say with a grain of salt. In other words, company recruiters don't always tell the truth and professional drivers don't always lie. Once you find a company that's willing to work with you, then come back to this forum and read everything about that company.

If you got your CDL on your own, you have very little chance of finding a driving job. You need current OTR driving experience or training from an approved driving school.

If you will do a search of the TTR Forum you can read many stories from drivers who tried this. Most gave up and attended a driving school.

If you want to move to TX or ND you might find a job hauling water in the oilfields. Good luck.

Good deal, I apologize for the misunderstanding. It is your location that is making your hunt so hard then. Numbers (123456) is very knowledgable in the Florida job market. I understand it is tough south of I-8.

 

Have you talked to Swift? They seem to hire just about anyone. For example, I received a call from PGT but they couldn't help me out because I didn't go to one of their approved schools, however, Swift didn't have a problem with that. At this point, I'm about 1 1/2 months removed from driving school; been trying to find a local job or get on with a "good" OTR company. The only companies that have shown interest are Melton and Swift. Obviously they are not my first choices but I'm starting to realize you might have to go with what you can just to get some experience.

 

G'day Eddie. Your location as to where to live should not be an issue with most trucking Companies. However, if it is an issue with a company then you're going to have to make a business decision, e.g, move where the jobs are or sit on your new CDL.

To me, it sound like you are good to go. You are trained, have a CDL and willing to work. How does your background look? Tickets, been fired from a prior job, any arrests, current warrants or detainers? If no, then perhaps something was mistakenly added to your background check. This is dumb, but how old are you?

You may want to visit the local police department and ask if they will do a NCIS check on you, e.g., Rap Sheet to include all states.

If there is nothing on the NCIS, then your question is way above my pay grade.

I have to agree that location in Florida is a big issue. I applied at Swift, CR England, US Xpress, Werner, USA Truck, Schneider, Heartland Express, Stevens, Central Refrig to get pre hired before I even start my CDL A schooling and only 2 carriers would even consider hiring me because of where I live. If you live south if I-4 your choices are limited. I went with CRST and I leave tomorrow on a Greyhound and arrive in Cedar Rapids Sunday around noon!
