Couple or three of questions if you shift without the clutch.
1. After a long day or on the road for a while, does your shifting ability degrade?
2. Some days can you just not shift?
3. Do you grind the gears occasionally?
I drive a Freightliner Century with Detroit 60 coupled to a Eaton 10 Speed. Some days I have it smooth and others not so much. I also find that when stressed I shift poorly.
I have had this truck since May I believe. Before that an International 9400i with a Cat C-13 coupled to a Eaton 10 Speed.
How long do you feel it takes you to master a new truck?
Thanks in advance.

A new transmission is like a new girlfriend.
Gotta learn how she likes to be driven. You really should have learned with in three months. Or maybe his relationship was never ment to be -
It should take no more than 500 miles to adapt to a different truck. Performance degrades from fatigue, technique and mental state. Someday's your hot and someday's your not. Everyone clicks a few teeth once in a while. If your missing gears from driving to long then you need to pull over!

I only miss a gear if I forget to turn off the jake switch and let the throttle all the way up when shifting.

1. After a long day or on the road for a while, does your shifting ability degrade?
Hopefully I park before getting to that point...
2. Some days can you just not shift?
No...
3. Do you grind the gears occasionally?
Yes...When rushing...
There seems to be enough of a delay before the jake kicks in to have that problem...I don't know if that varies from jake to jake, not enough experience...

Sometimes you can overthink the process. Just do it naturally, easily, do not concentrate on just shifting. If you put too much effort into the process, you loose your timing. If you have been driving a few months, you know how to do it. Stay cool about it.

Yeah, those jakes are a pain. The one in my Volvo grabs really hard, too. Sometimes I forget to flip my jake switch off on the dash and it messes me up when I take off again.
I've gotten a lot better about flipping it into the off position when I'm done, but traffic conditions usually distract me from the switch.
Otherwise, I have figured out how to float without touching any gears early or late. It's all about being consistent and not letting myself get into a hurry when I take off.
I've also finally learned how much or little I need to tap my throttle before I try to go into a lower gear. I'm not perfect, but I'm getting much better. -
I had some problems adjusting when I went from a cat to a detroit (same tranny) but wasnt for too long. If someone had that truck before you then they werent nice to it and check out your rearends. Had one going out on me and was smooth one day and not the next on the shifting.
