Im currently bouncing around some ideas and am looking for feedback and/ or information on doing short haul or intrastate work as an O/O. So far, I have a handle on the costs to operate a truck when it comes to fixed and variable expenses and have developed spreadsheets in MS Excel. THe part that I am having trouble with, is obtaining valuable data of what the loads pay. Without this my business plan is useless. Could someone direct me to a place where I could find current data on what loads pay, without signing up and having to pay for membership on load boards?

I don't believe you will find real-time rates without subscribing to the load boards. Even then not all post rates.

I got some information by looking at free loadboards like Landstar and calling the brokers. I also got a lot of information by reading every thread on the TTR Forum.

You can also find members that will have telephone conversations and share information.

For what you are looking for I would try to find some owners near me running like you want to. What state are you in?

Im in NE Ohio. I too have seen landstars boards. When you call and inquire about the rate, do they ask you for a company name?

Rates will be all over the place, even if you could see them. Asking a few won't help much. Yes, nearly all brokers will ask for an mc number up front to qualify you. While you're giving your number, they're typing it into a search to check your authority and safety score. If they're not too busy and you're upfront about why you're calling, they may carry on, but you ought to take anything they say with a grain of salt. They are salesman after all.

For short haul especially, you need to know a daily revenue target and cost in order to quote a profitable rate. That will be driven in part by what type of customer you're going after so you can estimate load/unload time. When the mileage on a load I'm quoting is less than about 300, the customer is now renting a truck with driver for some number of hours as far as I'm concerned. That's about where the sitting time is approaching or greater than drive time.

Short haul in OH with a van has about the best rates. Should be able to get $2+/mile average with little trouble. And shoot for a minimum daily of $500 with asking rate of $650.

But may want to look at adding IN, MI and IL to your plate. This is the sweet spot for your area. Plus some brokers will not even sign contract for just intra state. While waiting on my MC to go active was legal for IL and CHR and Landstar wouldn't work with me regardless that the loads I was looking at where intra state.

Haven't spend a lot of time in OH with my flat but it seemed all the shorter, heavy loads paid the same as running to IA. Plus they wanted me to tarp for 200 mile load in sunny weather. No thanks.

Should the truck be purchased first or should a written agreement with a broker? Im not a salesman, so getting my MC would be pretty much worthless as i need someone to find the freight for me.

Ohio is a sweetspot for sure and definitely dont do anything for less than 2.00 per mile (legal load) no matter where you are. In Ohio, I have seen a large number of good paying loads lots of times (for flatbed). Its definitely one of the places I like to end up. Try www.transportinvestments.com for an all o/o company to sign up with instead of the crappy landstar. The loadboard here is ok but better to align yourself with an agent which wont be hard to do but will be hard getting on with 1 of the 4 companies under transport investments umbrella.
