No. It's wireless from any capable phone or a MiFi to up to 5 computers in range. And yes, you set a password so that not anybody can just connect to it.

Correct. I was just giving you 2 options that are less than the standard $59 (5 gigs/month.) If you only need 2 gigs per month (which is actually quite adequate if you are not watching movies or downloading big files regularly) then I can tell you that I LOVE the hotspot capability on my Droid X or my wife's Thunderbolt.

Go with android. More options for tethering. I like my Thunderbolt because I can talk on the phone while the laptop is tethered and streaming netflix.

Guys, not to bust your bubble, but Verizon did away with Unlimited data back on July 7th, 2011. Smartphones can have a tethering plan added to your account for $20 with 2gb of data. This is ON TOP of the $30 you currently pay for the 2gb required by smartphones or the $29.99 unlimited plan if you are grandfathered in on our older plan. Now, you can either root your phone or use the other USB tethering tips outlined here OR you could just buy a Verizon Wireless 4G MiFi for $49.99 after mail in rebate and have 5gb of use while out on the road. The nice thing about the MiFi is that if you only have a 3G phone, you know have the ability to use it and 4 additional devices at 4G speeds on Verizon's 4G network.

 

Wireless service for a laptop, is Verizon the best, and are the minutes unlimited. thx I have a verizon flip phone, no computer on that baby.
