Hi there ladies and gents. I'm a total newbie here on this forum and trying to find my way around.I am retired after about 40 years in the advertising industry.I'm not a professional trucker but have a Heavy Duty driving licence as it's called in South Africa. Been driving a ten tonner with trailer here for my farmer brother in law to help him out when needed.Love trucking. My interest in long haul trucking was sparked by the TV program "Ice Road Truckers".I am impressed by the scenery showed in the program and the extreme conditions in which those drivers seem to operate.I suspect that what I see on TV will probably also not be like it really is there.I have also learned from other forums and sources that the trucking industry is not moonshine and roses. However I would love to do it because I believe a lot depends on one's attitude.I had been fortunate to visit the US and travelled by Greyhound bus from Boston through to New Mexico , up through Colorado and on to Chicago.Would love to do trucking anywhere in the US.I am aware I'll have to undergo training to get a CDL before anyone would consider me for employment in the US.Also have to get a work visa/permit first.I came across an outfit,Ice Road Truck Jobs .com. They sell an e-book called:"Ice Road Trucker Job Guide" which they claim to be THE authority in Ice Road Trucking Employment Industry.I e-mailed them twice for additional info before purchasing the e-book but to date has had no response.Does anyone on the forum perhaps know whether their book is as good as they claim it to be.Can anyone also give me advice about the best way for me as a foreigner to try and get employment in the US? Will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TTR. I wouldn't think that you'd need to buy any books, as all of the information you're looking for can be found right here. Save your money and spend some time reading all of the forums here.

The standards in the US and SA are worlds apart.
Not so much driving ability as the SA rigs are generally larger and heavier.
The administrative requirements the drivers have to adhere to in the US would disqualify a large portion of SA drivers.
The typical SA driver works far harder and for longer hours.
A good SA driver will find US trucking a walk in the park but most wont make the grade.
Health issues being a big reason. -
Welcoem to TTR!! great place to be.
