LTL linehaul is really where the money is. Im a local driver but I run linehaul on occasion. One day last week I grossed $482. It was 614 miles plus about 4 hours on hourly pay.

I used to do linehaul and hated it though. Never go back to that again, but I do like doing it on occasion for a nice paycheck.

We don't hire rookies. I think most LTL at a MINIMUM require 6 months. And that's getting lucky. A year is even better. Try applying at places that have trucks... goto food service places and be a hostler for a year. Go to ups and hostle, maybe a desperate building products company or a beverage company.

I was with swift for 4 months. After graduation I put in apps all over at local companys. About 2 months ago received a call from a local grain company. Long story short. Home 3 to 4 nights a week. Weekends off until harvest. Paid hourly. Downfall. Long hours but getting to see kids and wife more often is worth it. Put in apps and the old adage applies. Right place right time. Good luck.

Be careful. A lot of companies offering local jobs can take their pick of drivers, since a large number of drivers would like to be local. So any company willing to hire a newb for a local job is often not a great company. If the experienced drivers are passing the opportunity by, stop for a second and ask why.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's not possible to come out of school and land a great local job. Just be careful. You need to do just as much research on a local company as you would with an OTR company. Local job does not automatically equal good job.

One of my twins got hired by a lumber co;hourly pay OT after 40;but as soon as the business got slow they laid him off.His twin brother drove for a local beer distributer, teamsters union ,he blew out his back on that job carrying full beer kegs up or down flights of steps. Now he drives regional dedicated for swift, gets home once a week for his 34 hour reset;he doesn't touch the freight,it's drop and hook or live unload.Swift put him on that route right after he got off the trainers truck.

I have been looking for some type of local job where maybe not home every night but say at home maybe 3 to 4 nights a week. So far have found nothing remotely close to that.

I'd rather do my linehaul then your city work, l love just cruisin, listening to the radio, talking to my buddies on the phone, all that averaging $28 to $30 an hour.

Not putting you down, just sayin.

Look at your local beverage companies. Soda or beer.

I started with Coca Cola. Made about $12 an hour. Home every night, weekends off. This was back in 2000 to 2002.

They hire rookies all the time. It can be hard work though.
