I would be a linehaul driver too but we contract half our freight out (go union!) so the work is extremely unstable. Work one week, no work the next. Never a consistent start time.
It is by far the easiest job in LTL though, by far. Plus the most money. The city keeps me in decent shape. Some of those road drivers are so #### big they get winded just hooking a set, or climbing into the cab.

I hear ya on the contractors.
And I have to watch what I eat, and get exercise almost everyday just to keep in semi decent shape.

I was/am in the same position. I lucked out some what. I got a call from a temp agency that asked are you available. I said yes and they said can you be here in an hour. That turned into a 2 month gig after that initial day, the next ten days out of state, local after that. A fellow student from my class got a local job by applying everywhere, including those that asked for experience but it did take him a while. So apply everywhere. You might find someone desperate.

Check you local co ops and grain companys. I work for a grain company. Pay kinda stinks lots of hours but home most nights. Lots of work until winter but we haul everything to anywhere. This is the first day I have been home before four since I started. Its a small family owned business that cares about us. It is refreshing. Put in apps everywhere. Most keep them on record for 6 months. Heck my wife was even putting in apps when I was otr. Good luck local jobs are out there but getting your foot in the door is the trick.
