Have a t2000 and a 51' kentucky car hauler used to transport personal owned racecars for no commercial use. Have a dot # and ifta, but was told since it's not for commerce and all private, I would be exempt from fmcsa rules. Anybody know this first hand. Planning a cross country run for an event and trying to find out what, if any, permits and such I will need.

Where you racing at? What are you racing for? Is your race car sponsered? -
yeah that opens a whole can of worms! best get in touch with a DOT office.
-
vintage racing event, laguna, no sponsorship or price monies involved, all hobby/recreation.

Same questions here, does anyone know what rules apply if truck is used not for hire. What is needed? DOT number? Medical card etc? Any advice appreciated.
-
Should be the same as a RV
-
If you've got DOT#s on it, you got to run as such, you can only get by with it, and that's even a gray area now, if the power unit is a registered RV.

A trailer over 5 tons is still going to be required by a certified garage to be inspected per year.
It would be great if we could get Scalemaster or Diesel bear to weigh in on this. -
If it is truly personal, then it's personal. As far as a garage certify the trailer, that will fall back on the person's State laws.
In my 11 years of stopping trucks, I have encountered a few folks that have claimed personal race cars for fun. Like I said, they claimed it. But when you pop the trailer and the car's is decaled out, the firesuit hanging in their is decaled out like a Dale Earnhardt Jr fire suit with numerous sponsor's. If there is a chance they can win some sort of compensation, it is commercial.
There used to be an old interpretation that stated even if you ran for a trophy it was commercial. I believe that has been taken out, or I'm losing my touch. When I have a little bit of time to look I'll try to find that old interpretation in my old books.bullhaulerswife and lv2race Thank this. -
I understand personal vs. commercial. What rules apply for vehicles over 26,000lbs when used as personal? Is a DOT number required? Do you have to stop at scales? Medical card?
