You don't HAVE to learn how to drive a truck. I think you have plenty of choices. You're just handcuffing yourself by wanting to get a CDL. Go to Vegas and learn to drive D-9 dozers.

watkins shepard in mt...get ya a cdl, a truck and a decent job
operating heavy equipment aint my idea of a good time anymore....been there, dug that -
I liked it. I liked hauling it too, just not for $13.50 an hour.

Myself, I'd like working in a mine or on a construction project driving a D-9 or D-10. 13.50 an hour sounds low until one figures up how much an OTR driver makes per hour when he accounts for all his time he devotes to his duties, some of which he doesn't get paid for. I calculated once that I made about 12 an hour tops, and that was when I worked for CCC and a small outfit in Utah. When I first started with Swift, I'd pull maybe 8 an hour if I was lucky.
Maybe get both the CDL and the dozer-driver diploma? One can drive OTR until he gets sick of driving, and then go drive an earth mover for a while. -
You live in AZ? Swift is only as bad as you make it... Terminal in Phoenix, doesnt get much nicer then that. You could be home every other day plus run alot of miles. Plus they have alot of dedicated. I started with Swift about 5 1/2 years ago and after 6 months I moved on because they didnt work out for my needs, and they kept running me on the east coast and I live on the west coast. I know they have changed since then, they have what is called comfort zones now. Anyway, what ever choice you make good luck and drive safe!

Trucks and heavy machinery are alike in many ways. They both have their own quirks.
I have found that both tend to function best and last longer when operated by only ONE person, because when that same person has to be in this cab all day he takes care of it.
Unfortunately, while most companies will treat their trucks in this fashion, the same regard is often not shared by construction companies for their heavy equipment.
If one wanted to operate machinery for a living, a quarry or a mine would the best way to go there. -

They have a great breakfast burrito at the cafeteria in the phnx terminal. As well as other good food. You only will know unless you are a swift employee.
