No worse than what some of the Cat Lovers do lets see here Replace Cams Deck the engine Grind the Hed for Higher Compression Mairine sized Injectors Turbos I have seen were they are putting Cranks in them also. Not to mention Blck stiffeners also. My boss at the time had 40 Trucks 25 Cummins 10 cats and 5 60 series in them. The Cats spent more time in the shop than any of the others. All his Cummins he had Retorfitted with the Higher flowing Cooling System and Higher Pressure Oil System. Why he was like WTF where those people thinking Oil and Coolant is LIFE in these trucks I want the best flow I can get. He was the tyoe that learned from his Father that Maintance saved Engines. He changed oil Every 10K he greased the trucks Weekly he greased trailers By weekly if they made it to the Yard. Tires never a Cap in the fleet even on his Trailers. When you got inspected by the DOT and passed it you got a 250 dollar Bounus out of HIS pocket in cash next time at the yard. That give you an idea how he ran this company.

His drivers were loyal you never had to fight for loads we had 40 Company trucks and 30 O/O and still had trouble keeping up with freight. Company handbook was if you have an ISSUE SEE ME IN MY OFFICE I WILL FIX IT. You never had to argue with him. You as a Newby got a Cat powered Truck and were Upgraded to one of the better trucks when you where ready. Here is what the Newbies got Now remember this was in 96. They got an 88 Pete 379 with a 63 inch Highrise sleeper with a 350 Cat in it. Next upgrade was a 88 KW wth a 315 Cummins but the drivers of those trucks got the Heavy loads that paid them more. AKA we got an extra 4 cents a mile for loads that weighed over 48K on the trailers. We could haul 49.5K with those KW on the 53 footers we had.

Next upgrade was your choice the Detroits or another Cummins truck I had always wanted Rose and took it when the prevoius driver became an O/O leased to us. Here is how hard I ran most weeks 3.5 Rounds to Ferdonia NY from Streator it is exactly 550 Hub miles and took exactly 10 hours to make that trip less if I hammered on it :biggrin_25522:. We worked hard and were rewarded for it. I hated to leave that boss but when a BFI aka USX SUCKS undercut us on our largest contract by 40 cpm only looking for a Backhaul. He had to cut drivers. I was released he sold the truck rather than let another driver abuse her knowing the HP it held.

You got that right, thats like me saying I got this 900 horse cat that will out run everything then you find out its a pdi special rebuild with all the goodies and no expense overlooked, those are one in a million and cost as much as the truck itself.

Now wait a minute. I never said anything about your boss. I understand he was a great guy, thats good and hard to come by.

    But back to motors.....

You just stated they had to change to the high flow cooling, add bracing in the blocks and had PP/diesel power of pittsburgh parts installed in the motor..... Thats actually more work than what I've ever put in my Cat. Now I'm not putting out 800hp but neither is a stock, meaning orginal parts, cummins! Go ahead and put whatever button you want in the pump and it won't do 800.

As for what your boss or the drivers were doing wrong with the Cats, I can't tell you, but somethign wasn't right, I can tell you that. Cause if my Dad's old Big Cam's would've lasted as long as my Cat, he'd still have them!

Proves all my points in these posts, look what you have to do to outrun or out pull a big cat, a stock cummins out of the box is nothing but a turd.

I may wrong but the latest CAT news is they got out of the commercial truck business because they couldn't meet the standards. Cummins is still in the game. Just saying.

Yeah and for what this guy claims about Cummins. It just amazes me that a company can stay in business since 1923 all the while building such a crappy porduct...weird. He also says that most owner operators run cats, I have been seeing quite a bit more with Cummins engines in them. Not new trucks either. He also made the comment about Cummins not being used in sled pulls.

Guess he never heard of Tom Lindsay.
