    I'm a little dissapointed because I thought I was going to be able to get a job as soon as I received my CDL (A). Which is been a little over a month :biggrin_25513: and I've been interview in 5 different local companies and they all tell me the same "you don't have the experience" but as soon as you get at least a year under your belt give us a call. Darn it, if I get at least a year experience with a company, what makes you think I will leave them to come to you!! No sir, I believe in LOYALTY and I don't think I'll leave any company that gives me my first job. Any way I was wondering if any of you knew of any company in NYC that would give a newbie like myself a chance?
    I wouldn't even think of going otr at the moment because I have children, but as soon as they get a little older I would take a look at it. So if anyone has any suggestions they will be greatly appreciated.

    You picked the wrong line of work then. Hard to get a good local without exp. Can be done, but most of the time if one is open it is because no driver wants it. (red flag) Trucking is not a at home job. Even if you get a local after the long hours you will have time to eat shower and go to bed. Might as well go OTR.

    Sorry dude, you're a huge risk. Almost as much as I am. I'm in that whole 21-29 more than likely to have a truck rollover. I wish I could help more, but NYC has some tight roads, I may have a company in mind that could get you home more, but then maybe not as a newbie. Tried the Crete/Shaffer guys? It would be home on the weekends.

    Well, loyalty is admirable. However, in your case it may be misplaced.

    What I mean is, if you do manage to find a local outfit to accept you, you won't be able to tolerate working there for long. I could only stand about 6 months where I started out at. They went out of business soon thereafter.

    Thanks for the replies, but after reading them I feel that I wasted my time and money on getting my CDL if this is the way is going to be. How in the world do companies expect you to get "experience" if they don't give it to you. YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME ON THIS :biggrin_25510: But nevertheless thanks for the replies.:biggrin_25514:

    Just keep plugging away at it and dont give up looking. You might be loyal but if you find a crap job there would be no sense staying there longer than what is needed to get your experience just because your loyal, that dont always pay the bills. You will just have to look harder since you dont want to go OTR

    Its not as much the companies fault as it is insurance companies. Right now you have no experience. They do not know what kind of a driver you are. Its not a risk they are willing to take.

    I've been thru a lot of jobs. Loyalty is a good thing, but some times you'll need more than that to get you thru. Like was mentioned else where local isn't all its cracked up to be, especially when you are running 12 to 14 hr days. That does not leave much time for your kids.

    Yankeeefan, hey bud, hang in there.... and swallow that big apple pride... If your a new kid on the block you just have to start out on the bottom of the pole man... I would suggest getting your self a job with an OTR company... yes you most likely will have to go out with a driver trainer for awhile or maybe even attend a short driving school they offer... get at least a year under your belt as OTR then go for the local job Yankeefan. The trucking industry has changed alot and companies have to go by what there insurance companies dictate to them. thats why it's very difficult to get in the business without proper training from a school.... best of luck yankeefan... jetgang

    YankeeFan, Have you tried companies like Coke & Pepsi? They usually will take newbs. If I was you I would try to find something real quick. It has been over a month since you graduated from school. If you have too big of a gap between when you graduated from school and when you start working, companies will want you to take a refresher course.

    Brickman hit the nail on the head. The companies insurance writers dictate who is hire able. And if they have a policy that states that they will not cover anyone with zero experience, then they cannot hire you. Most insurance companies want a track record of the driver that they are insuring. Plain and simple.
