Welcome to maverick. Looking forward to reading your posts. If you are half as happy as I am with them you'll have a great time.[/QUOTE]
I am VERY HAPPY with them so far. I started orientation this past Sunday. Got to the abilities test Monday, but encountered a problem.
Note to all applicants:
If you don't have a primary care physician, GET ONE before applying to Maverick. (or any company for that matter)
I am fortunate I guess, and haven't had the need to be doctored for many years. And since I don't have insurance, I never had my own personal doctor. Before starting the abilities tests, you have to fill out a complete medical history. There is a line that asks you to list all surgeries you've had. Yes, even as a child. I thought honesty would be the best policy, so I listed two hernia operations I had as a 2-3 yr old child. Bilateral hernias threw up a red flag. Apparently, a hernia can re-occur, even though mine were in 1966.
Maverick sent me home (at their expense) to see a doctor (at my expense). They even paid me $90 for the 2 days I was there. I came home, got me a personal doc, faxed the form back that said I was healthy enough to take the abilities tests yesterday, and at 8:20 this morning got a call from Courtney. Another newbie had to delay his start, so I am on a bus (at Maverick's expense) again this Friday to return to LR.
James & Scott (instructors) are great. I even talked to a few drivers at the Maverick Hotel. Great bunch of guys. So far, my experience with Maverick has been unbelievably (is that a word?) awesome.
I can't wait to get back and get up on that box.
This little bump in my road could have been avoided IF I HAD MY OWN PERSONAL DOCTOR! He could have signed the form and faxed it back and I would have had no problem.
So, if you don't have your own doctor for whatever reason, GET ONE before applying for a trucking job. -
After starting the orientation process at LR, I have some advice for future applicants who get invited to come to LR.
1. Your recruiter will tell you to bring bedding for the truck. (twin sheets & pillow or sleeping bag). Greyhound will CHARGE YOU $10 for the extra bag. Plus it's just a hassle dragging that crap around with you.
2. You will be told to bring work boots or some king of hard-soled shoes and a week's worth of clothes. DON'T!
You will not be officially hired until Wednesday afternoon anyway.
The Maverick Hotel has a washer & dryer there. You can bring about 3 days of clothes and wash them for re-wear. And if you're like me and short of cash, no sense in buying boots & bedding until after you're officially hired anyway.
They have shuttle drivers who can take you to the mall or WalMart nearby to buy the laundry soap, work boots & bedding AFTER you get officially hired.
3. The Maverick Hotel does not have wi-fi. Apparently, too many newbies were surfing the porn sites, and they shut it off. I was told they were looking into turning it back on with some filtering or parental controls. Honestly, I don't know how a guy would have time for that. Your days are pretty full during orientation.
4. The first week is casual attire. Not torn jeans and wife beater shirts, mind you. I wore nice jeans & polo shirts. Make sure you have a pair of loose fitting pants (sweat pants are fine) for the abilities tests on Monday. There are certain amounts of weight you have to lift over your head, up to your waist and onto the table (representing the back of a trailer). You will have to show you can climb up onto a trailer, and into a cab. 4 squat down and stand back up. Pull so much weight & push so much. Your pulse rate will be taken before and after each exercise. you will have about a minute to rest after each activity, then they take your pulse again.
5. The ONLY place that will deliver to the MavHotel is a pizza place. It's good pizza, but just sayin'. There is a fridge for newbies in the lobby of the hotel. MARK YOUR STUFF with name & date. It gets cleaned out daily. Don't buy a bunch of food to keep there. You may have to leave it or throw it out if you get sent home. Remember...
YOU ARE NOT OFFICIALLY HIRED UNTIL WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
6. There is no TV in the room. A TV is in the lobby, but you watch what the older hands are watching. lol
7. Try not to smoke, drink any caffiene, or eat too much on Monday morning. This is the day you do your drug test & physical, and the abilities tests. You don't want you blood pressure or pulse rate to be affected by the coffee & cigs.
OH! And one last thing...
If you are not in the habit of wearing under shorts.....
Pack a pair of boxers or something for Monday. The docs don't seem to appreciate the free-ballers.Me & another newbie learned this the hard way. You will be asked to strip to your underwear & socks during the physical.
and one more last thing. sorry, but
DON'T WALK ON ANY GRASS!
Maverick spends a lot of money on grounds keeping, and has plenty of sidewalks and stuff. -
Oh, and the website says:
Will I have to get a passport?
Passports are not required at this time for the Temp Control Division.
Not true. You need to at least have proof you have applied for one when you get there. -
Other than that, everything makes sense. I did not know about the wifi situation because my husband does not have a laptop and does not use the Internet on his smartphone.BusDriver Thanks this. -
Yes, Pegasus. the terminal seems pretty secure. Most people come in on the bus though. I would rather drive than take the bus, but my car would be in LR for months until I could take enough time to get it back to IL. I could drive for about what the bus ticket costs.

HOLY CRAP!! Glad I hired in 8+ yrs aho. Sounds like a huge pain in the arse now. Btw I love the part about no "free ballers" roflmao :-O

Glad you are coming back. I am in the same class you you were in and we got our job offers today. If you would have been cleared for the physical I am sure you would arehave finished with the rest of us. Tuesday is centered around pretrip, the road test and finishing the video library and today was presentations by the safety/benefits/csr/operations departments then we got our job offers. Then you take a test on hazmat awareness and thats the day. See ya next week most of us are still here

Most people that get sent home never return. They get upset and think Maverick is just evil corporate trucking company with no compassion. Truthfully they have so many students going through the system if they made exceptions to the rules that's all they would be doing is dealing with exceptions.
I got sent home twice! First time was my SS card that I have had for nearly 40 years was unacceptable, 16 hour bus ride home. The second time was just as you described, minor surgery 10+ years ago and no family doctor.
Both times were quite upsetting but I took the view that it's going to take more than a little paper work to make me quit. When you take your emotions out of the equation the solution seems simple. The fact that you took care of this issue so quickly and without complaint proves you have what Maverick is looking for, good luck.
