Here is my situation, I currently work at a Distribution Center, but the company i work for is going out of business, and been applying but haven't had much luck. I do however, have a Class A CDL which i got back in 2007 via the Swift Academy (I know, insert jokes here) and drove for them for a short time before my fathers health required me to be near him everyday, so i got a warehouse gig. But, i have been now kicking around the idea of getting back behind the wheel. Some companies i have contacted told me i would have to take a refresher course, which i wouldn't mind doing, but the CDL training schools here need to pay out of pocket, take out a loan or some other way of paying, which due to divorce, credit is shot, don't have enough in savings to pay out of pocket, but i know some companies have their training schools, which you go through and start working for them afterwards, and as long as you stay with them for a certain time, tuition is paid for, which i have no problem doing. Now, question is, and im looking to hear from that awesome brotherhood of truckers, which is the lesser of all the trucking school evils? I have read some of the threads and not one company is perfect, but wanted to hear some insight from everyone.
I have my CDL, im a single guy so have nothing holding me here, I do want to get with a good trucking company but i know i will have to bite the bullet and go for one of these in house training companies first, get some miles under my belt before getting with a more local/dedicated company. Some of the one's i have researched were:
Stevens
Prime
Central Refrigerated
CR England
Knight
And No, i am not going back to swift, that company is a disaster, it served a purpose and i got my CDL, but their whole operation is a chaotic mess at best...looking at a different company, to springboard into a better one or even possibly owner/Op, Any advice, positive and negative would be greatly appreciated everyone!! Or if you know of another company that i didn't list that has a great training program, let me know.
