For all of you employed in the trucking ind. now, what was the main reason you went with the company you went with when you first got into trucking?

I started out driving in Alaska. Had moved there and was in a remote area that I couldn't land employment in the field I had been working in while in Colorado. I had gone to college and studied Computer Science and Mathematics. Well, had to find work, and I was raised a farm boy and had limited experience with trucks. Landed a job starting out driving end dumps. Gradually worked my way up to flats and tankers. After 10 years doing that and being out of the computer field, it was either stay with it or go back to school to get caught up. Well, still driving.

I went with a small company, less than 100 trucks because the difference between them and a large company is night and day. Family atmosphere, everybody knows you by name, better equipment and pay, friendly staff always willing to help you any way they can, and lots of freight to haul and its California and back each week so I don't go west one week and then New England the next. Wouldn't work for everone, but it works for me.

The main reason I picked Digby was they were in my state and I didn't have to go through the license change over hassle. I knew they went west and I wanted to see the west. That and they had the best lies in their ad. :)

Cowpie1 It is interesting to see you studied mathmatics, and computer science in college and would rather drive a truck. When I drove in the mid eighties you hardley ever saw that, but i know a bunch of folks with degrees driving a truck. I think the economy has some to do with it, but i honestly believe that these people are doing something with their lives that they truly enjoy doing.Alot of truck drivers today are very proffessional, and seem to drive smart, and not all pilled up and driving for hours, and hours and being a danger to all on the road. Best of luck to you and be safe

For my husband, it was a combination of money, home time, safety reputation for the company he is with, opportunities for money to go up either through advancement and/or CPM raises and benefits (I have my own health insurance so he was mostly looking for insurance benefits for himself and retirement benefits).
