Sounds like Roehl will eventially be paying out a huge settlement from the recent accident in Indiana.

I believe it was a Roehl truck that rear-ended a van and killed 10 people.

I didn't get paid for orientation at Roehl. I got a hotel room with another person who washed out after the physical/driving test and 2 meals per day.

Roehl made a mistake on my last paycheck, so I can see where the original poster would get this and/or exaggerate it (I told my dispatcher about it, and they sent me another check to make up for the $280 shortfall).

I was sent out to places and waited for backhauls more than a few times, so I can corroborate this too. I just figured it was part of trucking until I worked for another company. It's still not a big deal to me, but I generally figure if I am sleeping in the truck and am at work I should be working mostly, and if I am not doing anything, I should be at home.

The camera thing is new and a bit weird, but I guess someone else has seen them in a truck. I don't have an opinion about it, except I can't think of a better reason to drive naked. Someone staring at me naked for hours a day? They might go blind. Not to mention what I do to myself on my 10 hour resets...

The rest of the original post is pretty subjective and really poorly communicated. I also don't see how anyone can prove what the turnover rate is.

"obviously, driver experiences at Roehl can be uneven"

Not sure what the death toll is now. It was 7 right off the bat. But in all seriousness, why (and I mean on what grounds) should Roehl pay anything if the driver is not found at fault. It was already stated that a drug screen was done. Driver turned up negative. Why do big companies settle on no fault issues? It makes truck drivers look bad. I don't like it. In the end, it's the drivers that pay the bills, it would be nice if just once, a company would have the backbone to stand up and say, "no more".

I got paid for orientation, it was a set pay for finishing if I remember correctly. It wasn't much, but it was pay.

As for uneven experiences. Just listen to the van drivers at the picnic table in Gary, and you'll know. Being a flatbedder is better.

Been a long time since I drove the IN turnpike. They said the truck was doing 65mph and I remember it being 60 for trucks, unless they changed it.

65 for trucks, 70 for cars. I drive it all the time. But nice way of trying to point blame at the driver before all the facts from the investigation are released. I just love how drivers turn on one of their own.

Insurance companies settle all the time regardless of fault just because it's cheaper. I don't know about Indiana, but in Illinois if this went to civil court the case would be about what percentage the driver of the truck was at fault in the accident. Then they would decide total damages and the combination of the damages and percentage would be what the company would pay. So if the jury decided that the driver was 30% at fault and damages were 10 million then Roehl would be responsible for 3.3 million.

When a weather report gives visibility reports that is for airplanes, not cars. Keep in mind most weather reporting stations are located at airports. Even during daytime someone at ground level seldom has 10 mile visibility since the farthest you can see along the surface is 12 miles due to the curvature of the earth. It is possible that this driver never stood a chance depending on the terrain. I speak from experience since my wife's cousin was killed in a similar type of accident. He was a MO State Trooper in the tactical unit. He was speeding in response to a bank robber shooting at police. He came over a rise to find a semi that had just stopped to assist a motorist that had just been involved in an accident. They were in the hammer lane and he hit the semi at over 100 miles an hour. The robber went away for over 20 years for second degree murder. The semi driver didn't even have time to put out his triangles. He was trying to protect the disabled car from getting hit again and as far as I know was considered someone who just tried to do something helpful that had unintended consequences. The point is that we need to withhold judgement till all the facts are known.
