I got my Class A CDL with two hours training. It just depends on where you take the test as long as you pass the written, and pass the examiners driving test, you get your CDL. It cost me 350 bucks to pay a trainer and use his truck. But, that being said, you can either drive a truck or you can't. If you can't pass the employers driving test (and they will probably give you one), you aren't going to get hired. So, in my opinion paying a so-called truck driving school thousands of dollars is a ripoff to begin with. You are better off getting the license and then finding someone who is willing to train you to drive and go along with him for a couple weeks, even if you have to slip him 500 bucks to do it. As long as you have the CDL, you will be able to do at least some of the driving which will give you valuable experience. In my opinion, you don't need three months or one year of experience to drive a rig. You will know pretty much what you need to know after a couple weeks. You're either cut out for it or you're not.

How do you figure you have an upper hand when there are thousands of others with certificates are applying to the major carriers ? The real newcomers that have an upper hand in the industry are the ones that avoid the major carriers altogether .

The simple fact is this, like it or not the big carriers are the best entry point for a new driver. The only way to get a job with most of those big carriers is is to have some form of recent training with a school that has training agreements with those carriers.

All the not liking it in the world doesnt change that fact.

Also, for anyone that wants to bash of the transportation industry, I defy any of those people to point someone like me in a better direction. Tell me of another job that with just 3 weeks of training I can walk out the door and start making $40-$45K or more in my first year and with no previous experience.

Its not for everyone but I am thankful for the way I was treated by the school I went to and the carrier that is feeding my family right now.
