If the lights went out on the van as soon as they hit the deer and it is dark out then it is possible they didnt know where they stopped. They may have thought they were on the shoulder.

An Monday morning driver would say "I would just put a wheel on the rumble strip then move to the right. Now just think, you are driving a van along minding your own business and WHAM you hit a deer. The headlights go out and people are screaming "WTF was that". You cant see where you are going so your natural response is to step on the brake and stop.

Have any of you ever hit a deer? You have a van in all likely hood doing at least 65 overloaded and no one restrained. At that speed you hit a deer, what do you think happened to everyone in the van? My guess is that you had injuries even before the truck hit the van.

Very sad for all involved. Don't worrry though some ambulance chasing lawyer will subponea the drivers phone records and make it some how the Roehl drivers fault. And Roehls insurance company will pay out the wazoo instead of letting a jury decide who was really at fault.

This was an awful accident, Preacher you are probably right, there were probably injuries in the van before the truck ever hit it. The one thing I have not heard yet is what was the weather like? I know it was dark, but was there a moon, was it raining, were the roads wet? I understand that most of us drive around at somewhere between 55 and 63, if visability was limited then by the time the van was in the headlights the driver would have only had less than 200 feet to stop, he would have needed much more than that. This is a sad story, a family is now missing seven members, a driver will have be going through the what ifs, what if I had done this or that, trying to cope with what has happened. Many lives have been changed forever by this. I guess all we can do it pray for all of those that were involved, and hope that God gives them peace, so that they can go on with their lives.

This was in our local Sunday paper today. It said the ten people were packed in this van. 3 adults and 4 children were killed. It also said there was an infant killed. No one was wearing seatbelt, the infant was in a car seat, but not strapped in. According to the AP reports they were from Chicago and heading to a funeral on the east coast.

I went down this road just the other night and quite a bit lately as well I am sure as a lot of you have. A van that color, on that stretch of road, at night, with no lights? Yeah, you can say you are a professional and would have been able to avoid it all you want but those of us with just a tad bit of common sense know better. Supertruckers make me sick. Like a bunch of sharks that will prey on their own. Sad. RIP and I pray the driver can live a normal life after this. I kinda doubt it.

Well all I can say is that it is sad to hear anyone lost there life no matter what industry your in. It's probably gonna be the truck drivers fault. I look at the drivers age and guessing he had only been driving for a short period of time. I know, you have to start some where. It's these big companies that train these drivers and put them out on the road to deliver loads and make them work all kinds of hours. What the big picture is they just want a warm body behind the wheel so they can make a buck or two and don't care one bit about the driver. I know this isn't brain surgery to do this job, but training in other big industries last a lot longer than a couple of weeks. Maybe these big companies that train new drivers should extend the training of these new drivers. Makes sense to me.
