In the next few months or so, I will be going OTR. I am moderately big into physical fitness. Not a muscle freak by any means, but I enjoy keeping myself in shape. Any yahoo can tell you that driver fitness has been longtime ignored in this industry. I was wondering if any of you guys know of any truck stops that have fitness centers? Or...do you know or have experience with any regular gyms that have nationwide locations (at least a few in a majority of the states) or anything like that.

For those of you who are fit freaks like me, what do you to do stay healthy when gym facilities are not available? :biggrin_25514:

go to the the website for Travel Centers of America, T/A and they should have a list of what locations of thiers has a fitness centers, as well as many have walking / biking trails. I do know for sure The Barstow,CA location does have a fitness room.

To me, if you can't consistently "workout" at least every other day, and end up getting a real work-out once a week is not adequate and may as well not bother trying. You'll find that "workout facilities" at/near truck stops are very rare. Exercising may end up being a brisk walk around a rest area or a quiet truckstop (although that too is troublesome in the dead of winter) If you flatbed or choose to unload your own freight on occasion, you'll get a pretty decent amount of exercise that way.

I typically stay in a hotel at least 1 night a week and many of those offer at least a treadmill and maybe a stationary bike. I could never master the jump rope, but if you can, that might be a trucker's single best and lowest cost option for a quick and effective cardio workout, in addition to a 20 or 25 lb dumbbell for arm strength training in the cab.

Also, you can cut a piece of plywood that will fit under your mattress. Glue a 3/4 inch thick latex excercise pad to this board. This can be placed on top of the mattress for a "firm" pad to do stomach crunches. I don't like trying to do crunches on a soft mattress. I'd also recommend rounding the board edges, and maybe gluing some inexpensive fabric to the opposite side of the plywood and up around the edges to the top side (before gluing the latex) so it doesn't harm your sheets or blanket.

I have seen a few TAs with fitness centers. Earle, AR comes to mind right away.
Those fitness trails though. I saw the fitness trail outside the Harborcreek PA TA. Seemed more like a "walk along the side of this road and hope you don't get hit by a car" trail. You could always walk laps around the parking lot. I've seen drivers doing that.

The last TA I was at had a so called gym in there only 3 machines and the room was the size of a 1 man jail cell. But the tattoo shop inside was a decent size I hope in the future they should at least try to Mae it the same size as most driver lounges

I as well have seen many drivers walking laps around the parking lot, but with the way of how drivers ( new and vetern ) drive in tk stops parking lots, think i'd take my chances of the trail/path

If you have a DVD player in your cab, I recommend P90X as you can do at least some of the excercises in your truck.

I guess at least the TA is at least trying with there few and far between fitness centers. The Flying J and Petro usually have a supersize resturant with lousy, unhealthy food and a TV room.

Used to be few and far between, some places, Pilot I think tried a few locations, didn't last long. I've seen converted buses turned in to rolling gyms around truck stops. Anytime I've seen workout rooms, they're empty. Drivers aren't into fitness, guess I should say most drivers. Don't believe me ? See for yourself.....at any truck stop, all fast food joints. And drivers clamering for front row parking spots, too lazy to walk 20 extra feet.

Yes this I have seen! That's not me. I was a furniture delivery driver before going to CDL school. Also, I am a part-time firefighter back home. Like I said I am not a muscle freak, but I do believe in staying healthy (minus my pack a day)

Thanks guys for all the good info.
