One thing to check , is who hires out of the schools you are concidering ? That will tell you how good a school is ! I tell people in your shoes ( or close to it) to pick a carrier then work backwards to see whick schools they hire out of!

    Slimpack Thanks this.

Yes that's a very good idea. I'm going to call schnieder and a few other company's hiring students and ask them what schools they will hire out of in NY/NJ. I'm glad I asked this question because I was on the verge of going to a school that was closer to me and cheaper but is probably not as certified as some of the bigger schools. I don't want to spend money and wind up with a useless CDL.

Never, and I mean never use a credit card for every single purchase. You'll build up so much debt, you'll never be able to recover from it.

The LAST thing you want to do is pay for a CDL school with a credit card. What do you think is going to happen when you decide to quit? Guess what? That debt is still there collecting a 18-30% interest charge. You'll end up paying 10k+ for a school that cost 3k.

I went thru driver solutions program after a 14 year telecom career. It's not free - nothing ever is - but they had different levels of sponsorship. The big selling point to me was that I didn't have to pay any money upfront for schooling. I made affordable payments during my 1st yr driving. I chose to work PAM. Good company and glad I got me start with them. Now I'm driving locally here in Macon. I went to that school in Ft Wayne, In and it was a good experience. Great driving instructors and I stay in touch with them over facebook. anyway, I highly recommend the program because you get training and a job is lined up for you. My buddy went to a local trucking school and paid them a lot of money but he still don't have a job. He had a felony about 17 years ago and no body wants to hire him. But he still had to pay for trucking school.

Also, it looks like the USA Truck- Celadon merger is not happening from the news I've seen. And even if it did, drivers are the last people they would let go. They can't find enough long haul drivers now, so why fire them? they'd still have a bunch a trucks but no drivers? Sometimes the logic on these boards just baffle me. It's the office personnel with duplicate jobs that would be let go first if a merger happened.
Good luck with your decision. Trucking is a great career if you are committed.
