If you drop the HazMat and want to get it back later you will pay $$$ for the new background check. Also, in some states, you must get your CDL reissued without the endorsement printed on it.

You have to pay $$$ for the fingerprinting and background check whether you have a current HazMat endorsement or not...which is why I dropped HazMat this last time around. My fingerprints have not changed since the last time I jumped through their hoops. If I had done anything which would disqualify me from having the endorsement since the last time I had renewed it, I would still be in a room at the gray-bar motel. I haven't had enough HazMat loads to justify the expense, especially when the few HazMat load I have done haven't paid that much more than the non-HazMat loads I normally pull. Just not worth the hassle.

If you want to drop the HazMat endorsement, all you have to do is go into the DMV, tell them you aren't renewing that endorsement, and renew the rest of the license. Make sure you LOOK at your new license to make sure all of the endorsements and other information is correct BEFORE you walk away from the counter. Give your carrier a copy of your new license. Don't haul HazMat.

If at a future date you decide to add HazMat to your license again, you call the phone number or go online to do the TSA background check, go get fingerprinted, and when you get the letter, take it to the DMV. Take the written test, and once complete, they add the endorsement to your license.

It really isn't all THAT difficult to add/drop endorsements...
