I am thinking about getting a laptop to take on the road. Is it worth the price of broadband? I have Verizon for the cell phone, so I think it would be $59 a month for the broadband with a two year contract. A friend of mine said that the service stinks. He said that there isn't enough coverage. I figured that there would be coverage if the cell phone works. Is this true? Have any of you found that it is not worth the money or do you recommend it?
Thanks

I have the verizion air card and phone. the air card is a on better than the phone service. I have nt found anywhere I could not use the internet . And I'm talking about surfing the web in the middle of Montanna, Arizona, wyoming etc etc. Only once was it weak enouth that it kept disconnecting but it still was working.
Just a tip though. SPend the extra money on the USB modem instead of the pc card. First off you can put it in any computer not just a laptop, but mainly because it comes with a cord that if you plug the modem into the cord instead of the laptop there is TWO usb plugs on the other end of the cord that go to two usb port on the laptop. This doubles the power of the modem. Mabey that is why I get such good service, I don't know -
This is going to be a personal preferance here.
I have used broadband on the road. But find it to be too expensive for the amount of time it actually gets used. Now I just wait till I get home.
I spent maybe 3 hours out of the 1 month I actually had service while on the road....online. That worked out to $8 bucks an hour for me.
Until they can get the cost down, or access coverage of 100%. I'll stick to using the net at home. I pay $25 a month for BB at home, use it about 100+ hours (entire family)...very cost effective. I've also set up a wireless network at home. So I can take the old laptop out on the porch with me in the mornings, for coffee. -
Ok,
Being new to all this. My main purpose to the first question was to enable me to communicate with my wife while I am on the road, and have something to do during the 10 hours down time. We do have Verizon cell phones with texting, so I guess we can talk that way. The lap top has a wireless connection. Is there enough free internet out there to check email and maybe this forum once in a while out there? I do not really need the extra bill, just thought the convenience would be nice.
Thanks -
There is some free WiFi around, you just have to search the area you are in and see. There is even more pay WiFi where you can pay for a month, or just a day service.
I used the Verizon air card on the road and found that there is service a lot of places, even some that the phone don't work, and a very few places the phone works and the air card doesn't. I was lining up my loads with it, so the cost was a tax write off. If it wasn't for that and I had to pay the whole price out of my pocket I'm not sure I would have done it. -
Thanks Brickman

You can broke fast paying for the wi fi services.
You can use your verizion phone as a modem if you just want to email and such. That way you don't need to buy a cad but you can obviously only do one at a time and I think you may onle be able to use the internet when you are on a VERIZION network, not the extended network -
If you're on the extended network you will get dial up speeds. On the Verison network in most areas you will get Broadband speed. The way to find out is at the top of the display on your Verison phone you will have a simble that will either say "1x" or "EV". "EV" will give you broadband and "1x" will give you dial up speeds. -
You don't have to be in a Verizon area to get EVDO speeds.....there are lots of areas that have EVDO that are extended networks.... I had the Sprint USB720 and the Verizon USB720 @ the same time and the Verizon outperformed the Sprint every time I tried it.

Personally I haven't tried it, but if you frequent starbucks a lot, you might want to try T-Mobile hotspot.

I wonder how fast are those? And can you play online FPS game using T-Mobile hotspots?
