Hi. I am trying to get into the trucking industry. I am currently employed as a mechanic in the Air Force. I checked into a few companies and settled on Werner because of their ex military program that allows me to draw money out of the Montgomery GI bill. Also, my dad has been driving for them for 5 years and he likes it. I've heard a few drivers complaining about Werner but have not heard from someone who has been with them more than 4 months. does anyone that has been driving for Werner for a few years have anything to say about them, good or bad. I really don't feel like jumping from company to company for the rest of my life so I want my first trucking job to be a good one. Thanks.

Yes,hello. My first large company experience(90-94)Was with the up&coming outfit from omaha.Seems 2me you would already be in drivers seat at 27.Im a Qualified wrencher and bosses tend to keep people like ourselves wenchin cause the can pour any ole quart of oil from uptown in that drivers seat.I question what/if dad truely likes when tens of thousands differ.I suggest 2you 2continue your nice run in service.I have no better alternitve as far as job training. One thing about, and my looking back is with such a great corperation is with it being my first i had nothing 2compare it2.Im in a contionius learing improvement program 2this day.Keep the "Big Picture" in mind.Whatever that may be in your case.I spent the best workin days of my life with em and lived 2talk bout it witch is more than alot can say with such a big corp.I never signed-up but justified I served usa buy my trucking service,I was out over 100 days once and ran very hard.If you have a weak mind and a strong back this will be a positive.Happy Trails !

I drove for Werner from 1994-1999. I spent much more time sitting and waiting for a load to be dispatched than actually driving. When I did finally get a decent run, they would often want me to swap it out with another driver cutting my miles drastically. I really never could make a good wage at Werner, and home time was very infrequent. In short, I live on the west coast, so to Werner that translated to running me in the eastern half of the country 90% of the time. To attempt to remedy this, I switched from 48 states to a western regional fleet. Runs were short, around 350 miles or less, and were mostly overnight. I did finally get home on weekends, but this regional division lost it's steam and was dissolved. They doulble dispatched frequently, and it was a toss of the coin as to who actually got the load. Usually it was the guy who could find the empty trailer, which is a whole new story!
I could go on and on about Werner's deficiencies, but just do a search and you will find all the information you need. Take your time and use this forum for research. Just because you are new to the business does not mean you should have to put up with a BAD employer. There are better ones out there! Good luck to you!
