Make a list of all your wants and needs and start combing through websites. You can also go by a rest stop or truck stop and see what rolls through. Maybe even talk to some drivers. Once you have narrowed your field down to a couple dozen companies start calling recruiters to get the fine details. Don't make your decision on some bums bad experience at a company. Most likely would have happened to that driver anywhere they went. Personally I would aim toward the companies that aren't advertising as much. This means they have a lower turn over rate which in turn means happier drivers. Also you don't have to follow the herd. Think outside the box! Most newbies choose from a handful of mega-carriers that the schools recommend. The schools are promoting them because they are being paid by them. There are so many good gigs and outfits to drive for out there. Standard freight isn't your only option. If you want to haul a NASCAR go haul a NASCAR! If you want to haul cows, haul cows! Tankers, flatbeds, car haulers, reefers, horses, expedite, air freight, concert staging, tradeshows, moving companies, boat haulers, wide-load, heavy haul, dump trailer and much more..... Keep an open mind!

    Good luck man!

Still searching. How hard is it to land a first gig, if I go through private driving school?

As far as a school, I recommend a school totally independent of any particular company. Like many votechs and community colleges have. Many take longer, but the training is better. And since many of them are govt subsidized, they are less expensive than private schools. As for a company definately take Chompi's advise and think outside the box and avoid the mega-carriers. You will generally have better experiences with a smaller company.
