NJ no idle laws .

    Every truck must be different I guess. I turn on the cruise control and then press the ACC/RES button. It brings the RPM's up higher (900 RPM), but the truck will idle all you want.

    "10. Can I idle my vehicle to regenerate my diesel particulate filter (DPF)?

    Most diesel particulate filters “regenerate” or clean themselves during normal operation of the vehicle. For these vehicles, driving on the normal driving cycle will keep the filter clean and operating correctly. For a few vehicles that are model year 2007 or later, the regeneration cycle can only occur while the vehicle is parked and idling. In these circumstances only, the exemption at N.J.A.C. 7:27-14.3(b)5 applies while the DPF is regenerating. For these vehicles, there is an indicator light in the cab that shows that regeneration is occurring. Enforcement inspectors and police officers will need to see this light in order to ensure that idling is happening for DPF regeneration purposes only."

    One more thing to try. Set the trailer brakes, release the tractor brakes, take a stick and push on the pedal and raise the RPMs to 1000 or above. Doing this mine will idle 20 minutes. Of course when it shuts down the switch is still on and the fan for the heater is still running so after about 10 more minutes it's blowing ice cold air and you have to get up and shut the switch off to save the batteries. Still makes for a long restless night.

    Unless the truck had motion, movement, they had it set to shut down.

    It would die at railroad crossings with your foot on the brake, and giving it higher rpms.

    I did some research on the subject, and it turns out that it depends on how the ECM was programmed. For example, some ECM's are programmed not to let the truck idle if the OAT is between 20* and 80* F. If the OAT is under 20* or over 80* F, you can idle all you want.

    That being said, if this sounds like your truck and you don't have a bunk heater or a APU, I would request a different truck, or I would start looking for other companies to drive for.

    Trucks equipped with DPF have a regen switch on the dash panel you can press if you need to do a parked regen. The truck will not perform a parked regen unless this switch is pressed, and in order for the parked regen to initiate, the trucks ECM needs to call for it. If a regen isn't called for, you can ppress the regen switch all you want and nothing will happen.
