Anybody here using a dash mounted cam in your truck? I'm thinking about getting one for my new truck but don't have a clue what kind to get. I have found some as cheap as $59 but figure you'd be getting exactly what you pay for a piece of $59 junk. I don't want anything "professional" but something that will take a decent video.

I use a Sony Handycam DCR-SX44 on a Delkin extended suction cup mount. Camera is light weight and decent quality. There is an HD version available but I wasn't interested in HD, my camera is more of an insurance policy. Picked the camera up at Walmart, uses SD or Memory Stick cards and ordered the mount through Amazon.com

BTW I will only use Sony cameras. I have ordered some of those cheap dash cams and they are junk. One that came with it's own mount would overheat in the sunlight and shut off. What good it that? The reason I only use Sony cameras is past experience with sports videography. For the money, the Sony CCDs provide better color and clarity. There motion adjustment (steady shot) works very well adjusting for the suction cup mount too.

Thank LB. That's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for. Do you remember how much that model cost you? I'm mainly wanting it to CMA but also you see things happen and later think if only I could have gotten a picture or video of that it would have been awesome! :biggrin_25525:
BTW does that model used Infrared also for night vision? Is it clear enough to read license plates?

It is clear enough to read license plates if it's zoomed in a bit (it is pretty wide angle zoomed all the way out) and does well at night with no night shot built in. IIRC it cost around $160, and better models go up from there. There is also a model with a built in hard drive for around $300. The only thing I don't like about it is the screen has to be open for it to record so I just flip it around so the screen isn't shining in my face going down the road. I use a $40 plug in inverter to keep it charged while recording.
