Are there any companies out there that haul predominatly haul "serious" haz-mat? (ie. Explosives, Radioactive, Nuclear, Biological, etc etc).
Always had a huge interest, and getting started in trucking. Still in CDL school, so I'm a long way from that level, but it can't hurt to ask
Haz-Mat

Just about any tanker outfit will haul hazardous material from time to time. There are many more types of HazMat than the few you have mentioned. You'll need to haul less hazardous cargo before you can haul the serious stuff.
Getting into oilfield work might be a good way to get started. You might also try bulk OTR. You'd see a greater variety of cargo with OTR. -
TSMT does a fair bit of Class 1 and other stuff...if my eyes serve my well in glancing at placards as they slide by.
-
The real bad stuff will require you to be part of a team, as the truck can never be left unattended. I've hauled one load subject to NRC rules, and it was a bit of a pain, and this was really low level stuff. There are a number of companies that specialize in stuff like that, but you need to know how to drive the truck first. Three years would be about the minimum experience level to get into those operations.

done some minor stuff, its still a pain !

Sign on with an industrial waste hauler. They usually have a hard time keeping regular help, and, they haul it all. The beauty of industrial waste is that although the chemical must carry the placard, it has been spent, or, used to the point it isn't quite as nasty as the fresh stuff. Roll-Offs, end dumps, and, tankers are the easy hauls. A dry box full of mixed is a nightmare because of the segregation rules. Lot's to keep up with.

Wouldn't mind driving for these guys if it didn't require such a deep anal prob for the backgrounds on some of their loads.
I've heard (in a fairy tale) they pay pretty good. -
I would look into the oilfield doing wireline or well logging work. They explosives to perforate oil wells and are likely to hire new drivers.

Big thing to keep in mind, drive legal and safe and keep that mvr spotless otherwise you wont even get considered for the anal probe. I hope your background now is clean or forget it. BTW typical haz-mat haulers that haul things like you mentioned are now basically forbidden to talk about it due to all of the new security measures. Yes it gets advertised by the placards but those just generalize it. -
Dunno if I'd be looking at an explosive hauler that's always short a driver or two.
Saienga Thanks this.
