We are getting a 3 axle low boy with 55 ton cap. ( can add a 4th axle for 70 ton cap) and we are going to haul some precast containers with it and other misc loads, we might get into some heavy loads with it to, my question is what would be the best truck to use with this set up? Would we need a 3 axle truck, double frame etc....
Heavy Haul truck specs?

it depends on the weight your going to haul over 70000 lbs payload then yes a 4 axle truck is a must. also where you are going to run, off road or over the road. you really dont need heavy specs. i run a 8 axle setup with an regular over the road truck that i put a lift axle on. grossing around 120000 to 150000 all the time.SHC Thanks this.

Ya really probably not going to haul any heavier then what you are doing now just want to make sure we are on the right track.

My son's old Pete 379 glider was spec'd for heavy haul...600 CAT,18 speed, heavy locker rears.... he had a little thicker frame but not a double frame.
-
We gross up to 130,000 with our trucks.. 5 axle trailers and normal tri-axle trucks... Payload is no more then 82,000 lbs... We have heavy spec'd Frightshakers... 14,500 front.. 46,000 rears.. longer double framed day-cab tractors... Plus a 5th wheel lock with dual locks... Full Lockers as well...
Going into the landfills (we don't do this anymore) it's rough on the truck so I guess this is why they order the double frames (and they just keep them ordered with double frames) .. We would get pulled out with a D9 dozer sometimes, the trailer would come un-latched with a single latch 5th wheel when getting pulled out , so they changed to a dual lock 5th wheel..
The axle spec'd axles are just for the weight that you have on the trailer... -

You won't need a special truck just make sure your axle spacing and wheelbase is correct to meet the bridge formula.
One other thing that may sound obvious is stay away from anything with the lightweight suspension like the KW AG380. I've heard that with 34k on the drives they carry about 80psi which means there's no way it will carry a permit load. -
70-72psi thereabouts on mine, AG380 @ 34,000lbs... Never hit 80 psi til I saw some loads that had me 90,000+ gross.. probably a good thing I rarely do loads like that..

if its that 4 bag air ride with the curved spring, yea your right its only a 38000 lb suspension on 40000 lb rears. junk for heavyhaul.

Yep that's what it is 4bag
