Folks I need your help! Is mm 12, on I80 westbound in Indiana a 4 lane road? And if so what are the truck lane restrictions there? Are trucks restricted to the right two lanes or right 3 lanes?

In Indiana, think left lane for passing only, and I do belive it is 4 lanes but might only be 3. They have been doing eternal road construction in the area. Hard to tell what is open these days. Definately dont be in Left lane in Chicago area. They are proud of the driving awards. Just keep an eye out for signage for lane restrictions.

The construction on that segment is finished, but the speed limit was still marked at 45 up until a couple weeks ago.

The signage says no trucks in left lane, but I have heard to the effect that trucks are restricted in the two left lanes by statute, the sign should be what is right, but it is Indiana.

It's at least 4 lanes each way and can be more. Google maps street view still shows it under construction.

when i asked the a IN trooper when he pulled me over for a lane violation he basically told me the FAR left lane is the one they will hassle and cite truckers for, the 2nd left they understand that cars dick around in the right 2 lanes and trucks pass in the 2nd left lane and dont have a big issue as long as there not impeding flow of traffic.

Being in a lane of travel you're not supposed to be in. Many states have laws restricting trucks from being in the left lane on any highway with three lanes of travel in each direction. If you are cited for being in that lane, you have earned a lane violation.

There are a few places in California where trucks are to be in the right hand lane only. They are signed as such, usually it is on a long, steep uphill climb. So if the guy in front of you is going 15mph and you have enough git-up-and-go to pass, tough. Stay where you are. It's one of CHP's favorite tickets to write in those areas.

Thats what I thought. The sign says no trucks in the left lane and the road is a 4 lane highway. Do you know where I might be able to find this information documented anywhere? I figure Indiana DOT should have that, but maybe it's documented somewhere else.

Indiana is big on there left lane violations. Most the time there's no sign at all but they'll nail you. Worst places are 465 and 65 northbound thru the no fly zone. Southbound they tend to look the other way. Especially since the traffic is bad now because of the bridge backups.

I avoid asking anything of the Indiana BMV:biggrin_25513:,I just did a search online and came up with nothing helpful, but I would avoid the far left lane on any 3 lane or greater road. You can ask enforcement if you happen to see one outside the truck or if stopped by them for something else. IN uses lots of sedans even for the diesel bears. They also use motorcycles and lots of unmarked cars. If anyone can come up with the statute other than what some drivers have told me, i would appreciate seeing it.

On 4 or more, I try to stay out of the left 2, but that isn't always possible, and if traffic slows to a crawl, you may end up in the left lane going around an obstruction. You absolutely don't take the shoulder (breakdown lane) to get around it after coming up on an accident except to avoid hitting someone. If you are stopped and the shoulder looks clear enough to procede, only do that if law enforcement directs you, the Hoosier Helper will not.

The Hoosier Helper is a blocking vehicle patrol that helps to keep accident sites from becoming worse.

Traffic can be very heavy on that stretch and backups quickly span miles. The 12 mm exits are for I-65 north and south.

Does anyone know for SURE what the lane restriction is at mm12, I80 west in Indiana? I'm thinking trucks are restricted from the far left lane, but I need to know if the third lane also is restricted....
