BigBadBill Thanks this. -
Ok, without looking for my notes, doing it yourself VIA the web would be around $3-$500. That's for MC #. Might be a little less, can't remember. But, you also need some other things, like insurance (don't know your driving history etc), 2290, which is $550 for a yr, IFTA, cheap or free, (also can't remember), truck registration, (figure $1200-$2000) depending which state you use, and something called UCA, I believe, maybe $75 a yr. You don't need a trailer to get authority, but, if you're going that far, might as well. You want to be your own "Boss", right ? Don't use my figures as accuracy, call OOIDA. They're one of many agencies that will do it for you for a fee.

thanks for the question and responses. btw, how do we say "thank you" for the useful posts? can't seem to figure that part out here on the forum.

The filing fee to get your authority is $300. It is a one time fee. You will need to have registered agents in every state in which you do business. If you are a member of OOIDA, they will do it at no charge. If not, there are services that you can pay about $35/year. Before being able to obtain authority you will need insurance. Most shippers and brokers require a minimum of $1 million liability and $100,000 cargo. You won't be allowed to have authority without active insurance. There are services that will do the filing for you for a fee, but you can do it online yourself in about 20 minutes. You can apply for your DOT number at the same time you apply for authority. There is no charge for your dot number. It usually takes from 3-6 weeks to get your authority back once you apply.
There are some power only opportunities when you have your own authority. But, your opportunities will be greatly limited unless you have a trailer. JB Hunt has a program for those who have authority to pull their trailers. There are also others who also have similar programs. I would not get authority unless I could either buy or rent a trailer.san45bar and volvodriver01 Thank this.
