Well I've been on long-term disabilty for over 10 yrs now diagnosed with Major depresive disorder + General anxiety. In that time I've graduated county college with high honors in Liberal studies and worked part time off + on with 1 job lasting over 5 yrs. Haven't worked in the past 4 yrs at all but seriously considering signing up for truck driving school to get my CDL-A. What chance do I have to get working OTR or locally with any company? I'd no doubt take a local job driving a straight truck if I had to in the case anyone else wasn't willing to hire me. The main concern is going to school and not being hireable by ANYBODY.

My driving record is great and my credit score is great and only mention that because I know some jobs care about credit score. The meds I'm on now is a low dosage of Paxil + Klonipin. I definitely feel I could do OTR driving or at least local straight job driving. Assuming I do very well at trucking school do I have a chance?

The other question is if it turns out I'm not hireable by anyone in trucking but get a full time job doing something unrelated how long would I need to work to show that I'm a good F/T employee before thinking about applying to a trucking company? Say a full year goes by after going to driving school with having no actual employment as a driver what then? Would the school experience still be worth anything?

Btw not worried about the cost of school because the state wants to help out with that.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Well first off you would most likely have to ditch the meds. Trucking maybe a good career for you. You will be so busy, stressed and tired you won't have time for anxiety or depression! I don't mean that in a joking way either. So this just maybe the best medicine for you. Get out of your shell and breathe in the world for a little while! Good luck to you, I promise at the very least it will be interesting!

The meds are not an issue. The main concern I would have for you is that going OTR you would spend long periods of time alone. If your meds are taking care of your anxiety and depression I say go for it.

You would have trouble if you are on Klonopin. Its a controlled drug, and you would have to list it on your medical card information, which might be an issue.

If you had had previous experience in trucking you might do well, but I don't think you know what you are getting into mixing a major depression disorder with driving an 80000 lb. rig for a living.

If you go long haul, will you be able to see your doctor, for instance? I don't think most employers would take that chance, to be honest with you.

Yeah I'm a little concerned about the klonipin. I only see my doctor every 3 mths so not real concerned about that one. As far as driving think I'd be up to it and the reason I'd be going off disability is because I'm very stable now and have gotten quite well with the help of some smaller dosages of these meds that I've been on for several years.

Well either way I might go for it with the school and keep positive and with a CDL-A should at least be able to find a local job driving a straight truck which compared to not working like now would be a big improvement.

Just some quick advice. Unless you are under 35 most of the local gigs with straight trucks, like soda and beer trucks, wont hire drivers over that age.

I know its age discrmination but just check out the local canned vendor trucks drivers out next time. Age 19 to 30 mostly. Hard work, stop and go, unload all that heavy water at 9 pounds per gallon.

You might be able to get into food service hauling, but if you cant throw groceries all day and/or night long it wont work. Also, they usually want a driver who have worked the area beforehand.

I tried like hell to get on with Sysco Foods, had all the endoresments, clean record and lots of local miles. I never got hired there. Its rough going right now unless you can do OTR. Local driving is real picky right now.

Thank for the replies and keep 'em coming.

I'm really concerned about the lack of a solid work history for getting in with a company driving OTR solo. Would I only wind up with one of the undesired companies if any and if so HOW BAD are they?
