This info is very helpful. At first it seems like a really hard choice to make , but now I see either way the pay will be really close to the same, but per diem at least you get more time off each year paid.

For those of you who didnt see the news in another millis thread when my truck was backed into in July it had tio be towed from nj back to wisconsin. I got a ride from another millis driver and was issued a new truck. it then took me five weeks to get back to the old truck, which had already been repaired and reassigned. my belongings were boxed up and waiting for me. However my paper records of my trips were among things that were missing.

So I am falling short on my promise to do an anaysis of practical vs short because the pm data i recorded is gone. With that being said I will not switch back to practical miles and would not even consider until i had reached 5 years with the company and moving up on pay scale. It's my opinion that until I reached 10 yrs or close to it that the hhg will serve me better.

What you have to consider is that millis' terminals are strategically placed for their freightr lanes, as they are at any successful trucking company. With this in mind what is the most practical route form weedsport ny to richfield wisconsin? same as shortest right? what about cartersville ga to trenton, oh. I think if you begin to map these, knowing that customers are in areas surrounding the terminals you'll see very little desparity between actual miles vs. hhg on our loads and actual vs, practical.

Now keep in mind you ALWAYS drive practical routes regardless of your pay option, Millis does plan your routes for you. I see the biggest desparity in actual vs. short between trenton and eden. I have had an 1,100 mile trip from ny to tx and actual miles were 50 mi more than paid short miles, and a AL to WI that actual were 50 mi LESS than paid mi on a 700 mi trip. The biggest desparity I saw was 100+ miles in favor of company but I saw this on practical miles too. Where you get shorted on either is when you are leaving a drop and picking up in same zipcode. I left receiver to pick up load but had to drive 23 miles in wrong direction for my final stop within atlanta to get the load and it took another 21 mi to get back on route after loaded and I got paid 0 empty miles because I was in same zipcode. The worst thing is I lost a little more than an hour drive time for no pay. but the point is all companys that dont pay hub miles operate the same way and it doesn't matter whether your on pm or hhg.

I hope this info is helpful as I too am disappointed I could not provide actual trip comparisons. My hope is someonelse is keeping records as I did and will be able to add to this thread.

I saw recently where "Spanky" posted that he was on shortmiles/straight pay and I believe he was with the company for 6+ years before getting a local job. If this is accurate it gives me more reason to believe I may be on to something. Good Luck in your research and please share any pertinent info with others on this thread as I know its a popular and important topic.

I really do appreciate your info on this. What about this option - I have every single trip with paid and dh miles listed (these are miles Millis assigned with the dispatch). I would be more than willing to compare some trips with you if you want. I would say it's very likely that we have been to the same places quite often to get a good guage!

Let me know what you think!

Like wise on this...I have all the paid mileage (loaded and empty)...never really thought about writing down what the actual miles were for the trip to compare if I was to try different routes to get to same location...maybe something I will pickup on in the future!!

Sully is right a lot of it just depends on the runs you do. Honestly I made more money running short route miles than practical for the same reasons he's already stated. I kept track of every load I ever did for millis and when they first offered practical i did go to it for 6 months to try it and after comparing my miles I was losing money on practical miles. It was not a very big difference but it was enough for me to change back and take the .02 cents extra.

    Sully72 Thanks this.

I think its a good idea but probably should focus on loaded to start as dh probably has less starting points in common.

I ll sit down soon and put 40 or 50 short trips up.

Gotta call you guys to action! Its been six weeks since I posted some trips and I'm sure there are guys waiting on results. Can you do 6 to 12 comparisons while your home? I as well as others appreciate you volunteering for this experiment.
