my gauge is not working. sometimes it does, but most of time it doesn't. I know I need to send the cluster off to get a rebuild and fix it all, but don't have time right now.

My question is how can I hook up a universal fuel gauge from the auto parts store and make it work till I can fix the factory gauge?

    Please help.

use a stick, that's the most accurate fuel gauge at minimum cost.

I would rather have something in the cab with the driver so they could see it. I can go buy a cheap gauge at the auto parts store and splice into the 2 wires on the top of the tank and run it in the cab if this will work?

Not sure if the gauge would work but for the price of one it'd be worth a try. With that said, I personally do not trust a fuel gauge. I have nice broom handle cut to use as my fuel gauge. Theres no second guessing with the stick.

The latest technology on vehicles uses the fuel sending unit to send signal to chassis control module which calculates fuel remaining in the tank by percentage and displays this percentage on the gage. I'm not sure if Volvo used this technology on your truck, but regardless, if you install an independent gage and wire it correctly and your sending unit is good, it should work.
A high quality jacketed duplex (2 wire) should be used to run from the tank to the point of gage mounting in the cab.

I wonder if in 98 they used that kind of technology? I wouldn't think it got that complex till the newer style.

I'm not sure, I would have to read the manual on the fuel gage operation for a 98 and I don't have access.

Or if you wanted to get fancy about it, you could remove a plug from the bottom of the tank and install a clear hose up the end of the tank and you could view the fuel level in the mirror while rolling.:biggrin_25523:
