There's also a test about fuel additives, Lucas was one of the worst, it made already crappy US diesel even worse in lubricating fuel system.

My 07 Volvo with a 12 liter has had Royal Purple in it for the last 3 years, I have changed my 3 times and filters are dropped and changed every 25000. I cost me about 150 to change the filters and about 300 to drop the oil and filters. this year I am going to run a bypass filter most likey from NTZ and only change the oil when the oil samples tell me to. There are people getting well over 1 mil on regular oil with a by pass filter. currenty I have 665,000 on my motor and only put a gallon of make up in 25000 miles. (this is mostly becuse of the wiring harness at the rear of the head that leaks on these engines on this year). I have had samples run for the last 3 years and the only thing they found was a little water in the oil since i shutdown the motor and run the apu each night. The bypass filter will take that out. I have been tempted to run lucas the oil coating properties interest me, although I have been doing very well with out it. I just put Royal Purple in the rears when I was home, i left L.A. CA, and just stopped in Ga. The milage has jumped quite the bit. The Highest I have seen is 7.5 with the average up from 6.1 to 6.6. The only reason I have not put the bypass filter on earlier is the truck is still under lease, 10 more months.

For those that swear by Lucas, it is interesting that virgin oil samples done on this stuff show that it is only a 50w base oil. No additives of any kind. So, in essence you are thickening your oil and diluting the additive package in your regular oil. Why not just buy a 15w50 to get the same effect and at least you would have the additive package with it. And a gallon of 15w50 is half the price of Lucas and has the detergents, oxidation control, and anti wear additives that Lucas doesn't.

But on a simpler note. I still haven't figured out what is "unstable" about any of the oils on the market, that they need Lucas to "stabilize" them.
