I currently have a job running flatbed. I have close to 5 years experience in trucking and about 3 years OTR. I am going to be running in the northern states all winter. Fifty percent of what i haul is oversize. I am being paid 35cpm. I dont get any medical or benefits. Just 35cpm paid on a 1099. My average run is 700 miles. All the truckers i have talked with say i am getting screwed. Whats your opinion?
Oversize flatbed, am I being paid enough?

Yeah .35 for oversize and no bennies and no taxes taken out you're gonna get hit with self employment taxes on top of all others and it's illegal for him to pay you that way.
Old Man, Rollover the Original and SHC Thank this. -
You're way underpaid, considering it is 1099 Wages.
He's doing no SSI match, no benefits out of pocket, and since I saw your other thread, now he's trying to beat you up for a tire that may or may not been saved due to your pre-trip.
Yes, you should have pre-tripped your truck. Your supposed to go down the road with a safe and checked over ride.
I don't think it's illegal. It's just cheap, and it sounds like he's working for a bottom feeder o/o who thinks that truckers should work for peanuts.
If you have good driving history, a good DAC - find a new gig and tell tightwad to kiss it. -
I think it's illegal . A call to the regional IRS office could confirm this .SHC, Jarhed1964 and volvodriver01 Thank this.

well by paying the 1099 then he's looked at as a contractor per IRS< however by being paid that way he's supposed to have the decision making ability to run when and how he wants too. also he's supposed to provide the equipment needed to do the job on a per job basis. by paying 1099 the boss is only skipping out on matching taxes both federal state and ssi not to mention medicare. at the end of the year the driver will be taxed as a business owner not as employee there for his rates will be higher but he will not get the deductions other than per diem.
SHC Thanks this. -
It's illegal i went thru this several years ago and the irs made the employer pay back taxes and penalties and refunded what i paid in.

tearing up tires and who knows what else,
you may be overpaid !!!!! -
QUIT AND RUN AWAY......don't look back!

Yes sir! You need to find someone who will treat you with respect you.
sounds like they are using you. And setting you up for one heck of a
Tax bill! Best of luck! -
You couldn't get me off the couch for that wage....
I don't really know what I get per mile, as I'm paid 26% + hourly for tarping, layover, etc.
Last week's round was 879 miles, paid the truck $3200, paid me $832, so it works out to $0.946 per mile. Took 3 days to do.
This varies, but not a whole lot. It was an oversize, but it wasn't oversize enough for a pilot car.
I have 12 years experience, but still, I think you are getting the short end of the stick. I would think at leas .50 per mile for oversize....
