    Hi everyone!

I am a newcomer to the trucking industry, or least want to be (so please forgive me for my ignorance) but I have a recent felony conviction. (within the last six month's). I went to a recruiter and she stated that she probably can't help me because I have to stay local right now. (Colorado).

I am changing careers as a result and trucking has always been a passion of mine. With that said, I am wondering who all has been through something like this as well and since finding a job seems to be a challenge, would it be lucritive to purchase my own truck if I can't find someone in Colorado to hire me? And if thats a "good idea", how do I find out about loads etc... ?

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance any of you can offer!

    Stay safe!

    Jess

Finding a job, or a broker if you buy your own truck will depend on what exactly the felony was. Drugs or theft, for example, are definite nails in the coffin of your nascent career. Likewise fraud. Violence and gun-related felonies can also cause major issues.

Many large "mega" carriers will automatically deny you with any felony, despite what the recruiters tell you. A smaller, more local carrier may be willing to give you a chance. I would go in person to apply, and insist on talking to someone in HR or recruiting.

Buying your own truck is a major expense. You will be starting a business, and need to understand all the start up and running costs of such. Including fuel, maintainence, taxes, and other assorted business expenses. Also factor in slow paying brokers, and the various theives and liars that unfortunately abound in the trucking industry.

Do plenty of research before you spend dollar one. Trucking is a fairly expensive field to get into, and you want to be sure that you have all your ducks in a row before you start throwing cash around. Avoid at all costs "company paid" training if at all possible. A community college based course is usually your best track to getting your CDL-A. The courses are longer, but the knowledge is invaluable. If you decide to purchase your own truck, bear in mind that most brokers and companies still won't hire you without experience, so you may have to put another driver into that truck and pay him/her to drive it. Talk to Owner Operators (preferably successful ones) about the costs of operating your own truck, and stay as far away from company "lease" deals as you can.

    Any other questions?

You'd be well advised to ensure you can find employment before you spend one cent of your money. Its quite possible to blow thousands of dollars on a CDL, and not be employable - especially with a recent felony.

most companies want at least 5 years on the felonies they do accept.no good company will accept drug or violant felonies.there are a few that will accept them at 3 years.

Thanks guys. I am doing reserch now which is why I am on here and will be talking to other owner operator's. Thanks for that advice! Thus far I have figured around 50-75K to start up a trucking business, most of that cost in fuel and tires etc...

I would like to find someone to hire me (for the first few years anyway) before I start my own but that has been the challenge.

I will just throw it out there and tell you (at the risk of all of you judging me) that I had an extramarital affair on my now ex-wife and 4 months later she claimed it was not consensual. I couldnt be anymore sorry for my actions so I accepted a plea at my idiotic attorneys advice and have an ATTEMPETD sex assault conviction. I am not as bad as I appear on paper and have done so many GOOD things in my life for so many people but an irresposnible decision will haunt me forever and I am just trying to move past it. (Really it's between she, I and god now as to what really happenend and I am confident he will take care of what he needs to when appropriate).

That being said, if I did go that route of buying my own truck, will I be able to find loads and how do I even do that? Do those companies needeing freight shipped, do background checks etc...? There seems to be so many private trucking companies or owner operators that I would guess it's extremly competitive anyway. I found websites online that show avaialable freight but that seems to be a bid process, is that correct and is that a reliable way to learn about or getting loads etc...?

Again I am just trying to gather all the info I can to make an informed decision in the near future.

    Thanks again!

I wouldn't consider going owner operator as an option unless you have a ton of money to just pee away! It will be next to impossible just to find insurance! You will have to buy your truck cash too because no bank will finance you with no experience.

This is a really, really bad idea! Would you buy a plane without a pilots license?

Be a company driver for at the very least a year. Someone will hire you. Try the smaller mom and pop companies.

If you are looking to just giveaway your money send me a "pm" and I'll give you my address!

Thanks Chompi! And I don't have a ton of money to pee away so I guess you shouldn't expect me to send a PM re: your address- hahahahaha!:biggrin_25523:

I will lcontinue looking for someone here in Colorado to drive for. The other problem is that I have to stay local right now and can't be OTR. Do you have any suggestions where I can look for these "mom and pop shop companies"? I will keep doing reserach on my own as well...

You can try the better business bureau, but hitting the streets and driving around looking for small transport companies is probably the ticket. Rock haulers frequently have openings. Hint... don't try to cover-up your troubles. You're probably better off being up front about the legal troubles, and your desire to put your life back on track.
