Hello everyone..First of all, I'm new on here and just want to introduce myself a little. First of all, I'm married, with kids, I'm at a dead end job, I'm a wannabe trucker and I'm from Lexington, SC

I have done a good bit of research on truck schools, and companies that offer CDL training and have come to realize that I think I have found out that there are no companies that I want to get stuck with just to obtain my CDL, but I have found a school in the upper part of the state called Greenville Technical College. From what I have read about this school and others is that this particular school is the cheapest and best around here. Actually highly recommended. Out of all the schools and companies that I have called about, this school and Con-Way are the only ones that have returned my calls but havent tried to "sell" themselves. Thats always a good sign imo. Anyways, I'm signing up with this school and plan on starting on March 5 of 2012.

I am wanting to get a few more ideas and advise on this school in the meantime and I also want to get some ideas on housing while I'm in school (9 Weeks). As I mentioned earlier, I have kids and I am married, so I am not wanting to uproot the family and move upstate just for 2 months. My main question regarding housing is, is there housing available in the area that I can qualify for? Are there hotels that offer discounted rates for students? I talked an instructor up there and he did not know of any besides the ones for students that are in school fulltime. Can anyone give me some advise on how to handle this? I really dont want to yank the kids out of school in the middle of the school year just to move up there for 2 months or permantly. I do not want to spend the gas money to go back and forth except for maybe the weekends. Has anyone gone through this and have any advise or know of any funded programs that could help me out?

Thank you in advance for any ideas or advise that you have.

Hi. I just graduated from greenville tech. 12/6/11 yesterday. It is a great school, great instructors, fairly good equipment. I went to night class they said this is the last nihgt class for awhile. but i think they start day classes every ten weeks. it is a nine week class. and the lottery pays for some of the class. hope this helps good luck.

I personally have not gone to a truck driving school. I was taught in a yard by real professionals (old school). Been trucking for little while, have over 5 million miles, and still learning. My suggestion to you is: check with the school before you get there for lodging, possibly a part-time job(you gotta' eat) while your at the school, also check different companies before you get there(the school), via the internet, etc. # 1 Item is to check out what they are willing to pay you-you have a family to support. # 2 Item Benefits especially family benefits, who does what and how much, you have to weight this into consideration with your pay, etc. Your going to have to run the numbers before you sign on the dotted line. Also don't get talked into buying a truck straight out of school, they'll jam you every time. They make money and you DON'T!

the only recruiters that show up are Crete, Werner, Maveric and I think u.s. exspress. I went with Crete start on 1/9/12. Btw there are a couple of motels that rent rooms by the week close to school.

Yea , You're right superglide. As far as leasing a truck, that'll be the last thing I do..Different people have said that if I decided to lease a truck, the worst thing to do would be to lease one from the company that I'm pulling for..One thing I am looking out for, are for companies offering a higher cmp..A few guys that I have talked to say stay away because odds are I wont get the miles. Any truth to that?
