I'm also a new driver, what does that mean per diem is "forced"?

I have an approval for hire from

    JBS
    Roehl

    and am interested in

    Keller
    Schneider
    Central Refrigerated

    Any thoughts on those companies?

My situation is that I'm single, no family. I don't ever need to go home, I just want miles, and am willing to reset on the road. I just want good equipment, and a good trainer. Am I asking for too much?

forced per diam means a portion of your pay is paid tax free....jbs is .10per mile,...some co. will give you the option to take it or not...jbs do'se not....we have good and bad trainers here as in evarywhere...it has more to do if you "click" then not...if you do come here don't let a trainer tell you you will run as a team...you can if you want but both the student and trainer have to agree and get approval from the training mgr.

So you're saying that the order in which I have them listed, alphabetical order, should be the order of priority? And I'm not worried about being able to "keep track of" a list with just 4 names on it! :biggrin_2559:

Well, JBS is the only one telling me that there is "forced per diem".

I would much rather decide the tax implications of the money that I earn rather than letting the company do it for me.

Forced per diem is great for the company, but usually not so great for the recipient.

Actually, I left one off the list. I also have an "approval for hire" from Watkins-Shepard.

    So the list is:

    JBS
    KLLM
    May Trucking
    Stevens
    Watkins-Shepard

tax wise it is a wash for you.....the daily per deam per. IRS is $59 a day.....at the end of the yr you ad up all your days out x 59 and that is your deduction....if you have a perdiam paid to you you subtract that amount from the deduction...because you have aleady been paid that amount....so it is a wash for the driver...the disadvantige for the driver is if you need workers comp. or unemployment...it is calculated at the pre per diam rate....but overall it is a wash...some CO's that have the optanail program accully pay less per mile if you take the per diam and call it an adminastration fee.....yes it is a little more comlicated then i have stated here but over all it makes no diffrence

Yep , they have a 3 k signon bonus published the trucker mags too , Shasta Medic , ask for that too..per Shasta Medic
If your a new driver the options are limited , insurance regs prohibit most new drivers , so the self insured companies are most of likely to give you a chance after a year or two your options increase exponentialy, thus the industry l but it dependseep frog effect :biggrin_25525: But your order would be my preferred ranking

Talk to a competent tax accountant and/or financial/retirement planner and they'll tell you that per diem is not a good program for the driver. And while it might make little difference tax wise, it can make a huge difference come retirement time!

The company would be paying in less social security and Medicare thus you'd have less to draw on come time to collect social security.

Also, if the company has a 401(k) company match, they would pay less in for that as well, etc.

Now if we were disciplined enough to take that $0.10/mile and put it into a retirement account when we get it, it would wind up being a benefit for the driver as you're likely to be able to realize more gains on the money over time, if you make good investment choices.

So, the implications of forced per diem may seem to be "a wash" or a benefit to the driver on the surface in the short term. Come retirement time, it's not "a wash" or a benefit at all as it would impact the amount of social security that you have available to draw.

At the end of the day, the company benefits far more than the driver will from "forced per diem".

    DocRox and 123456 Thank this.

at millis transfer you can have non-perdiem, its great if your under the age of 52 cause the company pays (A LOT) less in social security tax, so on your W-2 it will show you made lets say 30 thousand last year on perdiem pay versus 40 thousand this year on non perdiem pay, so IF your older and want to retirer at 62 and get as much social security as you can you want non perdiem cause it will show your making around 40 to 50 grand per year versus perdiem pay at 30 to 40 per year, so everyone is different depending on there age, so if your young go per diem for more money in your pocket, older past the age of 52 non perdiem so you get more social security when retired, they the GOVERNMENT only go's by your last 10 years of wages before you retire
