he left Watkins to go flat bedding because it would take to long to wait for them to get him into it because they have a list of people (some were listed before him) who work there that want flat bedding

Since they dont normally do training its not really a schedualed thing, i am the only one there for training. The 2 guys that do the training are also the local drivers for the Houston Terminal so they have to work the training around what ever work they need to be doing as well, so today we didnt get to do much since there wasnt much on the yard to work with and they had allot to do.
But Anyway;
I got to Help a O/O Unsecure his 42' (i think) Container, then watch them attempt to take it off the 3 axle step deck it was on, turn it around and set it on the ground, its loaded VERY heavy, and they have a huge forklift...barely big enough, kept trying to tip the forklift over lol, but they got it done.
Then i got to help Unsecure a Oversize load that one of the trainers/local drivers went and picked up today, 16' Tall, 12'+ wide, and 65,000lbs Generator.
Then at the end of the day I got to Chain and Strap my own load, that we made with stuff from the yard. I didnt take any pics of the thing i straped down, but this is what i chained.
American TruckerPerpetual, Stoney, volvodriver01 and 9 others Thank this. -
On a motor like that or similar I would normally take one 20' and do one side . 2 boomers per side. Same as 2 chains. Never had a lot of shorter ones except for 1/2". Had 4 of those for dozers and other machinery. And then add few more and of course blade or any bucket or moveable boom has to be chained. Looks good. Life would be sweet if this was all they gave you to run.
Only pulled 2 loads over 16' tall. And got routed all over the place due to clearances. One going to CO had to go into WY and come back down Craig area.
You are going to enjoy it. Hopefully they don't tarp much. Machine tarp ok. 8' lumber tarps suck. Don't pay near enough for that much work.SheepDog Thanks this. -
Pre-trips/post-trips and fueling I already covered in my previous post. Those activities can be expected either daily (pre-trip/post-trip) or however many miles you can run on a tank of fuel (depending upon fuel capacity and mpg)...so the time which should typically be spent doing these things is already included in your wage.
Breakdown pay is an out-of-the-ordinary type of delay, not part of EVERY load. Same with a flat tire. That is a rare occurrence, NOT something that typically happens every trip. If your employer wishes to pay you for the time you spent broken down on the side of the road, that is between you and them. Otherwise, pay attention to what your truck is doing (sight, sound, smell, feel) while going down the road and do proper vehicle inspections before, during, and at the end of each day and simply avoid breaking down. If you never break down on the side of the road, your "breakdown time" isn't much of a concern.SheepDog Thanks this. -
I AM THINKING ABOUT LONE STAR TRANSPORT. THE RECRUITER SENT ME ALOT OF GOOD INFO FOR A COMPANY DRIVER. SOUNDS GREAT!
SO IF THEIR ARE ANY CURRENT COMPANY DRIVERS CAN YOU GIVE ME THE SCOOP! -
as far as i know im the only Lone Star driver on here lol.
American TruckerSheepDog Thanks this. -
Tied down 4 loads today:
1st load was a 20ish foot long container on a step deck, then 2 "saddels" is what they called them, they are big steel brackets used to secure tanks on a flatbed, then i did a set of Shell(c) Pipe Stakes, Then last but not least i learned to secure stacked trailers, which we had to stack first lol
We also unloaded another contatianer to the ground but this time, they lifted it off a step deck (3 axle), then he pulled out and i backed another step in from the other direction then backed it in and lifted it up again then pulled out then set it on the ground with the doors facing the way they wanted.
They said they are going to try and wrap up the training tomorrow, i'm going to ask for at least another day, I want more practice with this stuff. And they also do not train how to tarp or roll tarps here....so Whichever one you y'all FB'ers reading that i meet, i'll give you the honor of teaching me how to do it

Something else i've noticed and Learned:
I've met and talked to 20+ drivers since i've been here, ALL but 2 have been here 8-25 years. 1 has been here 3 months, and 1 i met today has been here 3 weeks.
I've talked to allot of O/O's as well since most Lone Star drivers are O/O's (262 Company Trucks/500+ O/O's) and they get 70% of what the load pays, and from what i've been told Lone Star does NOT pull cheap freight Period....
American Truckeralex94, The Challenger and Wedge Thank this. -
I TALKED TO A LONE STAR RECRUITER YESTERDAY AND SHE SENT ME SOME INFO BACK. IT ALL SEEEMS GREAT. HOWEVER I AM STILL RESEARCHING COMPANIES. I HAVE LOOKED AT MELTON, KEEN AND TMC. I AM LIKE YOU NEW TO FLATBED SO I GUESS I MAYBE THE ONLY ONE AT TRAINING ALSO! KEEP THE THREADS COMING - THEY HAVE ALMOST SWAYED ME TO LONE STAR!
DO YOU HAVE YOUR TRUCK YET?SheepDog Thanks this.
