Chopper63 can you tell me roughly how long it took to get a decision after you submitted your form? My hubby needs the vision exemption as he has 1 bum eye but has been driving for over 6 years. Clean driving record

ok, been awhile since ive checked this thread. i finally said screw it and went to take a dot physical to see where i am at as far as vision. as i said in prior posts my actual eye doctor said i was borderline and depending on the test and the day that i may be able to scrape by. so i drive to the doctors office and sit in the parking lot nervous as hell with anticipation. then i stroll on in and start filling out the form, i tell the doc that aside from the vision i should be able to pass with no issues. the doctor (who is a very nice guy) allowed me to come in and take the vision portion to see if i was able to pass before proceeding to anything else, therefore not wasting my money. i do the good eye and pass no problem. now time for the bum eye, i'm staring, squinting doing all i can do trying to make out these letters on the 20/40 line. i could sort of make out a few of the shapes just good enough that he told me i passed! again, i freakin passed!!!! the rest of the exam was a breeze. i was so excited i wanted to jump up and scream but i managed to keep my composure until i left the office. now that the hard part is out of the way for two years im gonna start researching my next step. i gotta get the ball rolling pretty soon though in case i need to use that exemption in two years. having experience wouldnt hurt. and since i barely passed, im now nervous that im gonna go to a company and they will send me home if i happen to not pass their dot physical. do all companies make you take another physical of does your medical card suffice? thanks.....

Theres one hitch in this plan. You take a vision test at the BMV to get the license too. THEY can deny the license if you're border line. So keep that in mind.

oh great, another mountain to climb. do all companies make you take another physical before they hire you? meaning 3 physicals total?

this outta be a $100,000.00 dollar a year profession with all the hoops one has to jump through just to get behind the wheel. not to mention all the hoopla once you get rolling....... who knew!!

I was right where you are with the eyes.3 yrs ago I tried to get my CDL. Got as far as the temps. At that time the guy told me , I better get glasses, I was so borderline. I was squinting all the time. Had headaches.

Got glasses. Amazed at how out of focus everything was before. there is NO WAY I could read an atlas without them. I still need a magnifying glass the print is so small. Think of them as a tool to help in this new job.

I did it! i went to take my permit test today at the dmv. as the woman was filling out my paperwork i noticed an eye test machine sitting to my right. i was hoping and praying she wasnt gonna ask me to take another eye exam since i already had my medical card to verify i meet the standards. not so lucky. she says to step over to the eye machine, now im not a religeous man by any means but i somehow managed to pass this test, it was actually more clear then the test at the eye doctor. it was like my vision had for a split second, improved just enough to make out those letters without really struggling.
now that the hard part was out of the way it was knowledge and air brake test time!! bring it on!!! missed 1 on the knowledge portion and aced the air brake portion. the test was actually much easier then i had imagined it being. so im proud to say that i finally have a class A permit in hand! been waiting for this day for almost 20 years...... now to learn some skills and how to wheel one of these big sob's........

If you have driven a 4 wheeler for a few years with a CLEAN driving record how would that not demonstrate competency? If you can drive a 4 wheeler safely and you have adapted to your vision deficiency then you should be able to operate a CMV safely.

And would they have you take anther eye test at the DMV after you got your vision waiver and then another one before you got hired? Whats the point? If the FMCSA signed off on you driving a CMV then shouldnt the DMV and company thats hiring you in terms of the vision parts of the exam?

FMCSA is relaxing on the experience rule, they are in the process of reducing the experience required from 3 years to either 1 year,or eliminating the experience requirement completely. I applied for the exemption 3 months ago using only one year experience in a CMV,and 10 years driving a straight truck, and they are in the process of approving it.I should have it in another month, after it has been posted on Regulations.Gov for 30 days.
