    Hi,
I'm currently enlisted in the Air Force scheduled to separate next year, and I’m looking into maybe driving for awhile when I first get out. Anyway I was looking at the Schneider website and I found this:

    · Quick-hire process — allowing active military to apply, interview and be accepted up to two months prior to separation

Anyone have any experience with this? How does the process work? Will I have to sign a contract even if I can pay for the school myself (MGIB)? Also I was wondering is my IFSAC hazmat certification is applicable toward a CDL hazmat license? I know a lot of questions but any info will help, thanks!

I attended a school while on active duty, the education office will pay every penny of it. Look into a permissive TDY or take leave. If you go with a company school you will be contracted to stay with that company for a certain amount of time.

I am in the same boat as you are. I am looking into Werner. There are a couple reasons. I am going to use the MGIB to pay for my schooling. Plus, Werner has a program for ex-military that allows you to draw money out of the MGIB for your first year of driving. The recruiter I talked to said you can draw up to $750 per month. For info on this check out the Werner website under drivers/apprenticeship program/veteran benefits.

The Roehl Honor Program does the same thing. I am looking at doing the same thing with my MGIB but I recommend you do your research before going with Werner. Roehl is about the best one going if you want to do the MGIB thing. They have a 2 year apprentice program to draw money and get paid a salary to boot.

I looked into Roehl, but I am from California, and they didn't have any fleets in California that hired new drivers.

I went to the Werner website, and I saw the apprenticeship program, but I didn't see anything for Vets. What is the differance in pay during your "apprenticship" verces if you just drove for them as a already CDL certified driver?

another thing that makes it hard is I am stationed overseas guys, so I can't just drive down the street and talk to a school or anything like that, so all the research I'm doing is online

I am going to go to school at a local comunity college. You can do a google search for schools in your hometown and get phone numbers and call them. I am in Idaho but will be going to school in MO. I just called the school and they gave me all the info.

This is where I first found out about the apprenticeship program from Werner.

    http://www.werner.com/content/res/drv/apprentice/va/vaeligible/

The info on how much money you can draw I got from my dad. He drives for werner and he asked his dispatcher about it. She told him that the pay is the same for the apprenticeship program as it would be if you came right out of school and started driving. You will get $350 per week for 4 to 6 weeks with a trainer. After that you will get regular milage pay and your own truck. I'm looking into a regional route hauling goods for Dollar General. My dad's dispatcher sayed the guys driving those routes are averaging $1000 a week.

Ok, I looked up what the MGIB will pay us on the gi bill website

    www.gibill.va.gov

For the apprenticeship program they will pay you $928.50 per month for your first 6 months, $661.93 per month for your second 6 months, $409.15 per month for your third 6 months, and $397.25 for the remainder of the program. These rates are efective 1 jan 2008. They are slightly higher right now but not much.

At these rates you will get an extra $9,542.58 your first year and an extra $4,838.40 your second year if you go with Roehl. Plus, all of this money is TAX FREE!!
