hi all, im tossing up between a C15 @550hp and Series 60 (12.7@500hp or 14@515hp) I work local carting shipping containers, normally gross 71500lbs to 93500lbs and travel within a 40mile radius from the port of brisbane. usally return to the port with emptycontainer (gross 42000lbs) we have some hilly areas (not mountains) but often trucks dont get through traffic lights before they turn red again so pretty steep!
my stolen truck had a M11 in it and was rated at 400hp, poor thing worked its butt off, on average i was getting 5.2 to 5.4 miles to a gallon, it was stock with stock mufflers.
Im thinking that a C15 - 6NZ , with donaldson M100463 mufflers, and 5232 code and fuel wire mod will get me better fuel economy and i will also be able to skip some gears (18spd).
all engines are PRE - EGR
Just looking for your opinions, in that will i get better miles per gallon with any of the above engines, compared to the M11, and if possible about how much better would you think i might get. eg 0.2 miles to gallon improvement???
hope there is enough info here.
regards Dave
please help me choose suitable engine

You can get a good idea on fuel mileage by the EPA decal and the MM3 of fuel used to make HP.
I realise this site loves Cats with all the mods and they all get great fuel mileage, that is a lot of fantasy. Just like every truck in the truck stop has max weight.
The Cat is on the oil cooler, the Detroit is on the valve cover. -
ok i just managed to find some info on Cats (C13 and C15) C13 are recommended for up to a gross of 80,000lbs, so because i often carry up to 93500lbs a C15 is the correct cat engine for my application. Now ive gotta find what the detroit 12.7 and 14 are recommended for in gross lbs. anyone??
Additional info found - S60 12.7 are also recommended for up to gross of 80,000lbs.Last edited: Dec 21, 2011

I had a 6nz, 475/1750 in my '03 Peterbilt. I loved it, got 6.4mpg running 80000+ gross. Traded it for this MXS C-15 set at 550/1850. Trust me, the 6nz would run rings around this Accert!
I also had a 2000 Pete with a 12.7 Detroit at 500/1650, hated it. No torque period! just my $.02...AUSSIE DAVE Thanks this. -
thanks Nevs, I appreciate ya input, the more info i can get from people here on the forum the better, im the type of person that is anal about research, tech stuff, cant help being this way (its a curse at times) finding info on detroits has proven to be a pain in the butt, so far i have spent over 15 hours on the net trying to research detroits and come up with jack Sh-t -
try isx mate no problems with them in New Zealand not like the signatures, and our hilly terain makes up for your heat .new detroit 60s have real good warranty tho million clicks

Thanks Bro, lol (couldnt resist) ive pretty much decided it will likely be a C15, or maybe? a 14l series 60. Oh yep 2nd hand as i cant afford new and not worth buying new for the money i get for loads over here. I like cummins last truck was a cummins. -
yep last k104 i had was signature 580 did 700ks with it no probs but others in fleet did,got t408 16 mths ago and 1 of your aussie cummins techs cam with ride with me lap top plugged in ,isx hummed after that 550 peak at 580 ,heard they put off road codes in injectors and pump and that from other forum in here

You can't get better mileage from Cat than you get from M-11. M-11 is one of the most fuel efficient engines there is, if everything is OK. There is bad examples of course. We used them at 60 tons, heavy local work, no problems. I'd go for a Volvo D-12...

60 tons? 60,000lbs or 60,000kg? and yes it was a great engine never gave me trouble ran great all the time.
