As I said in my introduction, Im a 56 year-old semi-retired diesel teacher. I got into that line of work from the marine world and moved on to other systems on OTR trucks and heavy equipment.
Ive lurked about this, and other forums, for some time picking up knowledge from the forumites. Ive never joined any of the trucking forums as I didnt feel like I belonged. Believe me, I know the difference between doing something & teaching something.
What brings me here now is a very, very bad idea that came to me within the last few days at least my wife will think its a bad idea. I think Im going to buy a truck in the not too distant future. I cant see me driving professionally, but Id like to clean up & play with an older truck. It looks like I could reasonably expect to pick one up for $5k or even less. I know that won't buy much of a truck, but it doesn't have to be. Since its only going to be a toy, I cant justify putting much money into the purchase.
I see myself, now and then, running an hour up the road to see my parents or grab a burger or something like I did when I owned my old Avanti. Many of the practical considerations in selecting a truck wont have to be dealt with in my case.
So here it is, Im thinking about picking up a retired cabover to play with. Im should say Im leaning heavily towards a cabover, but thats still open to debate. As Im probably not going to be towing anything, engine size and gearing probably isnt as important. A single rear axle would probably be OK, but Im open to two. Im not sold on any one brand, but Id really like an old 2-stroke DD provided parts arent a problem. I love the sound and simplicity of a 2-stroke.
I can picture a number of you shaking your head at just another poser, but, aside from my enjoyment, I imagine it will make me a better teacher. I'm hoping you gents, and ladies, will be kind enough to keep me from stepping in something nasty.
What should I look for? What should I stay away from?

In all seriousness (and that would be a change for my day, trust me!), I'd be kinda interested in the responses to this myself. While I'm done driving commercially, I've been thinking about buying an older tractor and turning it into an RV. You know, stretch out the frame and drop one of those mini-apartment sleepers in, with a standard hitch so I can tow my POV on a small trailer. -
I would definitely go with a cabover if you do buy one. I'm thinking you do it up like BJ and the Bear. Power wash all the grease off it and use it for demo's at the local Elementaries in your area. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

I think it would be cool as all getout. I'm thinking a KW T660, cause I like the lines of them. With a stretched out sleeper, I can pretend to be a big trucker driverer, and still have my 4wheeler to go places the big truck would be inconvenient for during my travels. Plus, I think a big truck would be alot more comfortable for me to drive long distances than one of those "bus" type RVs.

If you're just wanting a truck a Freightliner FLD would be a good option because they are cheap and you would never have a hard time finding parts. I did a quick search on truckpaper and found a few trucks I wouldn't mind restoring if I had the time. Here's a KW I liked:
