Thanks for the reply. Reason I asked the first truck I ever drove (52-53) was an International KB5 straight truck. Had the straight six cyl engine, 5 speed trans, 2 speed axle, single drive axle and an 18 foot livestock bed. 2 speed shifter was like a choke cable coming out on the dash in the middle. Right under the "crank" that opened the windshsield.

I later graduated to a "470" GMC tractor with 30 foot single axle cattle trailer. Little truck had a 6 cyl engine that reminded you of the engine in later Chevy cars. Wind up and roll. A unique feature of this rig was the brakes. Tractor had "air over hydraulic" brakes and the trailer staight air.
Quite tricky in braking as the pedal set up off the floor just like a regular hydraulic vacum booster.
To go way back, prior to the K series, there was D series. R.L. McIlwaine from Urbana. IL had several of them hauling feed corn south in 48-49. One he had was a D40 with a tag axle. Big load of shelled corn to scoop off when I was a kid.
Again, thanks for the reply. Us OLD GUYS like to reminence.

Walleye you are the person I want to be when I grow up! I hope everything works out for you. I'm giving myself to October, 2012 I'm buying my truck on my birthday. Looking at the used Pro Star or Peterbilts at Truck World.

My own company (one truck and me) that's what I want. At least when management goofys up you can go in the bathroom and give em a good swift kick in the #####. Although you might need a mirror LOL!

Keep your head up and I will be praying to the trucking god for you.

That's the wrong question to ask.

The right question is: what YEAR is the best on the market?

The answer is 2004 or older without all the emissions crap on them.

You might have to work on it and sink some money into it before you run it, but at least you won't be on the hook and spending over 50% of your time in the garage!

    BINGO!

    We have a winner...

Of course, for what you would spend on a glider now, once you're done putting the motor, trans, etc. in, you can get a nice pre-2004 truck with a good frame, clean wiring/air lines, decent motor/trans with maintenance paperwork, and rework it into something real nice.

Gliders are currently hard to come by. From what I understand, at least with PACCAR, they are considered 'parts', not a complete vehicle. As such, PACCAR only runs them through the production line at certain times of the year when they get enough orders...and there is a fairly long wait right now.

Personally, I would not buy a EGR and/or DPF equipped hunk o junk, unless it came with a free wrecker (with a pre-2004 motor) and unlimited free fuel.

old thread but...boys, it's about time everyone stops talking about "pre-emission" engines. "new" ones are not all that bad. i've been using "emission engine" for many miles without any problems... get over pre-emission stuff, new laws are here to stay.:biggrin_25513:
