I've chosen to get my CDL and make driving my career. I want to go over-the-road and get some experience. Just one little problem, I just looked at my drivers abstract and I have 4 points(two separate tickets), and a seat belt violation. All from 2011. I am looking to get my Class A and go over the road. I would hate to go to driving school, go through all that work just to realize that I can't get hired anywhere.
I am just trying to gauge how bad 4 points on my license is. Any advice would help. I am going to talk to a recruiter on Tuesday and i'll ask if thats ok. Id like to hear what everyone thinks. Thanks
4 points on license, is that ok?

NO points for seat belt violation.

Its definitely alarming, but I believe most of the starter companies will take you...but you can't afford any more tickets or you won't be working

Most driving schools will look at your record before you start and tell you whether or not you are hire-able. That way you won't be wasting your time and theirs. Schools tend to pride themselves on their placement rates.
-
The schools that have integrity will but the schools that lack integrity will take your money with no remorse. It's business to them and no more.

That's why it's best to look at PTDI certified schools and community colleges and not Joe Blow's School of Truck Driving.

In most states its a civil penalty and would not show up on your driving record, but maybe things have changed?

Companies won't look at points, but the violation. Most carriers will take someone with 2 or perhaps 3 moving violations within the last 3 years. Due to the close proximity of the violations it will be something that will cause concern to any insurance company or carrier looking to hire you. If you can get on with a carrier, you best not get any more violations during the next 3 years or you will find it difficult to find a job with any carrier. I am assuming that you have moving violations, such as speeding, etc., If any of the tickets are for driving 15+mph over the posted speed limit you may find it difficult to find a job.
CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
I didn't get any points for the seatbelt violation, but it shows up on my New York state drivers abstract.

2 of the points are for talking on the cell phone. The other 2 are for "disobeying a traffic signal" or something like that.
