I start my new career as a truck driver at Cross Country Truck Driver School, Thomasville, NC, on 01/02/2012. I already have some offers to consider and would like any constructive feedback. I'm 50 years old (soon to be 51) and have 25 years experience as a law enforcement officer.

    • I have a conditional offer of employment from Schneider National in their tanker division. According to the job description and the recruiter, six day per month guaranteed off at home (I specifically asked about home).
    • I have a "letter of intent to hire" from Watkins-Shepard for their Conover terminal. According to the recruiter, no guarantee but most weekends at home and sometimes a day during the week too.
    • I've also talked to Crete, Prime, and Millis. Millis accepted me into their training school starting in February, so if I go that route I won't go to Cross Country.
So, what do you think would be the best offer and why. One consideration is that I'm a company man. I'm not interested in owner/operator, lease, independent contractor, etc. I am also pretty dedicated once I make up my mind. I've only had two jobs in my life: Navy and law enforcement.

I would go wither either one W/S training I hear is like 10 days and then your on your own I believe.SNI tanker is also a pretty good fit also, getting tanker experience right off the bat sounds like a good deal but I would start in van first, also if you go to Millis or any trucking company own school, you would have to sign a agreement stating you'll drive for them for a X amount of time which can be 12-18 months or more and in that time frame if you quit, they will send you a bill for your CDL training. Also pay might be on the lower side also.

If you want to go tank? Check into Superior. They pay for things Schneider doesn't.

Wsyrob is a poster on here. He works for Superior. IIRC they take grads for training. Looks like you would be $$ ahead over ANY training company.

I would say Schneider dry van. They run alot of freight out of greensboro plus the terminal in Charlotte. There a very good company IMOO. After that i would go to Crete. Good luck with wich ever you choose.

Yea go schneider van if you like to be in the slow lane they are one of the slow truck companies. I pass them all day long. When I see there truck I automaticaly get in the left lane.If your a retired cop go with a company that pays well and doesn't get passed by most companies. Check out JBS carrriers they have awsome benifits good luck with who ever you choose.

I have received four more conditonal offers:
    • Covenant (seems to be more negative than positive comments about them)
    • Con-Way (seems to be about 50/50 on comments)
    • USA Truck (seems to be about 50/50 on comments)
    • CR England (way more negative than positive comments)
Oh my, decisions, decisions, decisions. I think I might like tankers. They seem to have better home time and make a little more money. I never really thought about flat beds until recently reading some threads on here.

Well i belive that i would find the best company with the best saftey scores and that would keep me busy and get me home when needed. The speed of the truck would be my last concern !!!!!!!!!!! But i think you could do way better than USA,CrEngland ,Covanant, or Conway TL . Good luck with your career.

My husband went to Cross Country. They do an excellent job at training. He is now with Maverick driving flatbed. After talking to many "newbies" Cross Country goes above and beyond to train you right. You get plenty of drive time in various truck/trailers. They cover mapping and paper logs very well and for the price I don't think you can go wrong with them.

A friend went to another School in Asheboro and they placed him with USA. Horrible horrible out come. Now he is stuck paying the school bill and is scared off from trucking all together.

After finishing Cross Country you should be able to have your pic of really good companies. Hubby had 5 top ones to choose from. So far he loves working for Maverick.
